Aerial surveys were conducted over Baffin Bay during May-October 1978-79 and off West Greenland and over southern Baffin Bay, Davis Strait and Hudson Strait during March 1981-82. Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) were dispersed throughout the pack ice in northern Davis Strait and Baffin Bay during late winter and spring and moved into nearshore areas in and adjacent to Lancaster Sound during late June and July. Important summering areas were identified in Buchan Gulf, Eclipse Sound, Admiralty Inlet, Prince ...

Mapping of the perennial snow/ice cover which existed on Baffin Island about 300 years ago, by means of light-toned areas of sparse lichen cover visible on satellite photographs, has made it possible to map the Little Ice Age glaciation level (a type of snowline). Comparison with the modern glaciation level (which is 200–300 m higher) is not meaningful, for it is not necessarily in equilibrium with the present climate. However, energy/mass balance modelling gives a 1963–1972 mean “snowline” which roughly ...

Accumulations of fine particles have been observed in coarse-grained, well-drained soils in Arctic areas, and have also been reported in alpine and temperate areas. Both silt caps on cobbles and silt-enriched horizons have been explained as the result of frost sorting. Detailed particle-size analysis of soils from the eastern Canadian Arctic reveals trends which are inconsistent with the frost-sorting hypothesis. In the soil matrix, all particles finer than fine sand show surpluses at some depth. ...

The Cape Dyer area of easternmost Baffin Island was isolated from the Laurentide Ice Sheet by the fiords of Cumberland Peninsula. Accordingly, the glacial chronology at Cape Dyer is that of local ice only and is indicative of the local climate throughout the late Quaternary. Six drift units, representing three periods of restricted glaciation and three of expanded glaciation, are present. Beyond the most distal drift is an area that has not been modified by glaciation. The expanded glaciations were ...

This study investigates the present geographical boundaries and environmental limits of the diatom flora in the Baffin Bay and Davis Strait area. Seventy-four sea floor surface samples were examined. The raw data were analyzed with the CABFAC factor analysis program. Five factor assemblages, explaining 87% of the observed variance, emerged from this test. The statistically most important assemblage is the “Baffin Current assemblage”, composed ofThalassiosira gravida spores. The second assemblage ...

It has been common practice to estimate ice-age climates by calculating the difference in temperature, at an assumed lapse rate, between the elevation of the present snowline and that represented by the lowest corries (cirques) in a region. Such a procedure not only ignores many other factors which may affect corrie glacierization, but is actually incorrect, because the change in snowline for a given temperature change does not depend only on lapse rate. This study suggests that the variation of ...

ABSTRACT Laterally extensive dolomite beds seven to 12 meters below present sea level in Baffin Bay, Texas yield C14 ages of from 2,300 to 4,300 years B. P. and therefore must have formed subtidally. The one to five micron dolomicrites show no replacement textures and may have formed by direct precipitation. The dolomite is enriched approximately 3 permil in O18 over co-existing aragonite and Mg-calcite and contains approximately 800 ppm Sr. The Sr content of these dolomites is considerably higher ...

On Baffin Island, the major minerals in lapis lazuli are calcite, lazurite, diopside, nepheline and phlogopite in the Main Occurrence and calcite, lazurite, diopside, plagioclase and scapolite in the North Occurrence. The abundances of Na, K, S, Cl, Br, F and Fe, the well-developed layering parallel to the regional foliation, and the scarcity of intrusive rocks, support the hypothesis that the deposit evolved from an evaporite parent during regional metamorphism. After sedimentation, considerable ...
