The transport of phosphate in intestinal brush‐border membrane and parotid basolateral membrane vesicles isolated from sheep maintained on high and low phosphate diets have been studied. The mechanism of the transport of phosphate in the intestine is via a proton symporter whilst in the parotid gland it is effected by a Na+ coupled transporter. In sheep fed a low‐P diet there is no change in the capacity of the parotid basolateral membrane to transport phosphate into the parotid end piece cells. ...

Breast-conserving surgery for the treatment of cancer frequently requires a repeat operation due to the initial excision of the tumour being incomplete. Improved image guidance, using preoperative MR images, might help to reduce this high re-excision rate. Since the diagnostic MR images are acquired prone, but surgery is performed supine, significant deformation of the soft tissue of the breast occurs. We have developed an approach to account for this deformation based on a patient-specific biomechanical ...

The uptake of phosphate (Pi) into cells and its assimilation into cellular material are essential features of metabolism. In ruminants, secretion of Pi via the parotid saliva and the subsequent reabsorption in the small intestine are essential aspects of the massive recycling of Pi. Pi serves both as a buffer against the volatile fatty acids produced in the rumen by microbial fermentation, and as a nutrient for the rumen microorganisms. Dietary Pi deficiency in ruminants has been shown to lead to ...
