Overexpression of c-met and suppression of matrix metalloproteinase-10 (MMP-10) and cathepsin F genes was previously shown to normalize wound healing, epithelial and stem cell marker patterns in organ-cultured human diabetic corneas. We now examined if gene therapy of limbal cells only would produce similar effects. Eight pairs of organ-cultured autopsy human diabetic corneas were used. One cornea of each pair was treated for 48 h with adenoviruses (Ad) harboring full-length c-met mRNA or a mixture ( ...

The anesthesia-related cardiac arrest (CA) rate is a quality indicator to improve patient safety in the perioperative period. A systematic review with meta-analysis of the worldwide literature related to anesthesia-related CA rate has not yet been performed. This study aimed to analyze global data on anesthesia-related and perioperative CA rates according to country's Human Development Index (HDI) and by time. In addition, we compared the anesthesia-related and perioperative CA rates in low- and high- ...

Signs and symptoms of oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) were correlated with microbiology and clinical response to fluconazole in a cohort of patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and recurrent OPC. Sixty-four HIV-infected patients with a median CD4 cell count of <50/mm3 (range, 3–318/mm3) who presented with OPC were enrolled in a longitudinal study. Specimens for cultures were taken weekly until clinical resolution. Therapy with fluconazole was increased weekly as required ...

Background: Conventional fluid resuscitation with Ringer's lactated (RL) activates neutrophils and causes end-organ damage. We have previously shown that HSPTX, a combination of small volume hypertonic saline (HS) and pentoxifylline (PTX), a phosphodiesterase-inhibitor, downregulates in vitro neutrophil activation and proinflammatory mediator synthesis. Herein, we hypothesized that HSPTX decreases end-organ injury when compared with RL in an animal model of hemorrhagic shock. Methods: Sprague-Dawley ...

Two trained and experienced clinical psychologists and two nontrained students rated the sections in Gunderson's Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines (DIB) on the basis of hospital records for 16 patients (DIB-R). The results showed that both reliability and validity, i.e., correlations with an actual interview, were unexpectedly high, around .80 for the trained judges and around .55 for the nontrained judges. The conclusion is that the DIB may be used for retrospective diagnosis of borderline patients ...

Background: In the United Arab Emirates the sting of the Pachycondyla sennaarensis ant (PSA) causes allergic reactions in certain persons. It is a common problem and is becoming a public health hazard. Up to now the diagnosis has been based only on the history, because the mechanism of the reaction was not yet established. Objective: The aim of our study was to prepare an allergenic extract that would be used for skin tests and to prepare a reagent for specific IgE titration. Results of both skin ...

The effects of ruminal concentrations of CO2 and O2 on glucose-stimulated and endogenous fermentation of the rumen isotrichid ciliate Dasytricha ruminantium were investigated. Principal metabolic products were lactic, butyric and acetic acids, H2 and CO2. Traces of propionic acid were also detected; formic acid present in the incubation supernatants was found to be a fermentation product of the bacteria closely associated with this rumen ciliate. 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed alanine as a minor ...

Endotoxemia is accompanied by pro-inflammatory cytokine production, generation of reactive oxygen species, and end-organ injury. Whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) was frequently used to treat brain metastases in the past. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is now generally preferred to WBRT for patients with limited brain metastases. SRS can also be used to treat extensive brain metastases (>10–15 metastases), and clinical trials are currently comparing WBRT with SRS for extensive disease. SRS may allow for an increased risk of radiation necrosis or leptomeningeal disease dissemination after treatment. Preoperative SRS and multifraction ...

In Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, the integration and transmission of signals from peripheral sensory transducers depend on voltage-gated sodium channels (Navs) which underlie the initiation of action potentials in peripheral terminals and their propagation to the central nervous system. 1. Dorsal root ganglion neurons express diverse sodium channels 1.1. Dynamic expression of Navs Dynamic expression of several Navs with distinct gating and pharmacological properties has been reported in DRG ...
