It has been reported that heat and radiation together as a modality can be used to treat human cancer. However, a preferred time and dose relationship for combined treatment has not been developed. This has been largely a result of the inability to quantify the lethal effects of heat alone or in combination with radiation. As a result, heat alone or combined with radiation, at its present state of development, is an unacceptable alternative for the treatment of cancer. Therefore, this chapter reviews ...

The radiation response of the skin of the C3H mouse was evaluated in terms of the dose of radiation required to produce moist desquamation completely surrounding the lower aspect of the hind leg by 21 days following irradiation (DD50-21). Irradiation of the leg under various conditions of local tissue oxygenation indicated that when the ...

Synchronous Chinese hamster cells were heated to 45.500C before, during, or after Xirradiation. The lethal effects of heat and radiation treatment were determined by the capacity of single cells to form colonies. Heat treatment prior to irradiation during G, or S was more effective, in terms of cell killing than heat treatment during ...

Cytoplasmic thymidine kinase from cardiac muscle of the rat has been characterized. It has a pH optimum of 9.0 and a K(m) value for thymidine of 1.6mum. The sedimentation coefficient of this enzyme in sucrose gradients is 4.5S, which represents a molecular weight of approx. 69000. Thymidine kinase prepared from cardiac muscle of foetal, neonatal and adult rats is inhibited by dTTP and dTDP; there is neither inhibition nor stimulation by dTMP, dCTP, dATP, dGTP or cyclic AMP. The activity of thymidine ...

The hemodynamic and cardiac biochemical effects of global ischemic arrest during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) were studied in 54 animals and compared to seven animals without ischemic arrest. Ischemic arrest alone reduced the first derivative of left ventricular force of contraction (LV dF/dt) to 52 percent of control 10 minutes after resuming function and to 64 percent after I hour of reperfusion. Cardiac output was depressed to 52 percent of control after 10 minutes of reperfusion, and to 74 percent ...

Noting the below observations, it appears possible to avail ourselves of much of the useful research done in the past to aid us in developing a generic model for daylight availability across North America. Much can be learned of a general nature by reviewing the sky illuminance measurement of others, but to make this wealth of information useful for our particular interest in North American skies, which is our objective here, extensive sky measurement must be initiated for several strategic sites ...
