WHILE on ornithological field trips {n the Province of Misiones (Argentina) between 1949 and 1954, I was able to gather a few notes on the habits of the rare Brazilian Merganser (Mergus octosetaceus). On these trips, sponsored by the Buenos Aires Natural History Museum, our main purpose was to collect specimens and data for a complete analysis of the avifauna of the region; some extra time was devoted to this species, because of its rarity. So little is known about this merganser, that my observations, ...

The optimal timing of repair for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) in patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is controversial. Repair during ECMO may improve respiratory function by restoring normal anatomy. However, there is increased risk of complications including surgical bleeding. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of timing of CDH repair on outcomes in a large cohort of patients treated at a single institution. We retrospectively reviewed charts of ...

Right-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (R-CDH) occurs in up to 25% of all CDH cases, but has been less widely studied compared to left-sided defects. We sought to compare characteristics and outcomes of left- versus right-sided defects in a large cohort of CDH patients who underwent standardized treatment and follow-up at a single institution. We retrospectively reviewed charts of all CDH patients in our pulmonary hypoplasia program from January 2002 through December 2014. Spheres of copper, lead, tin, iron, aluminum, zinc, silver, and lead-tin alloys were accelerated to velocities of 0.75 to 2.25 km/sec and impacted normally upon targets of the same material as the pellets. Conditions were maintained so that pellets lost no mass before striking the target. The target mass was large compared to the mass of the pellet, so the targets could be considered semi-infinite. The volume of the crater produced was found to be directly proportional to the kinetic energy of the ...

Perinatal insults result in developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and other profound permanent neurologic impairments. The EXTracorporeal Environment for Neonatal Development (EXTEND) aims to transition premature neonates through this sensitive period, but it's impact on neurologic development requires analysis.
