We investigated the actions of a panel of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils, and monocytes. Indomethacin alone was a potent and selective inducer of eosinophil and basophil shape change. In eosinophils, indomethacin induced chemotaxis, CD11b up-regulation, respiratory burst, and L-selectin shedding but did not cause up-regulation of CD63 expression. Pretreatment of eosinophils with indomethacin also enhanced subsequent eosinophil shape change induced by ...

Mast cells are tissue-resident cells with important functions in allergy and inflammation. Pluripotential hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow give rise to committed mast cell progenitors that transit via the blood to tissues throughout the body, where they mature. Knowledge is limited about the factors that release mast cell progenitors from the bone marrow or recruit them to remote tissues. Mouse femoral bone marrow cells were cultured with IL-3 for 2 wk and a range of chemotactic agents ...

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is an autosomal recessive disease consisting of oculocutaneous albinism and a storage pool deficiency resulting from absent platelet dense bodies. The disorder is genetically heterogeneous. The majority of patients, including members of a large genetic isolate in northwest Puerto Rico, have mutations in HPS1. Another gene, ADTB3A, was shown to cause HPS-2 in two brothers having compound heterozygous mutations that allowed for residual production of the gene product, ...

The accuracy of different ultrasound methods for determining the volume of urine in the bladder was compared using three methods in current use. Each method was applied to the same ultrasound images from 16 patients with prostatic hypertrophy. The calculated volumes were compared with the true volumes derived by measurement of voided and catheterdrained urine. All methods showed similar degrees of accuracy in quantifying bladder volumes. The range of errors of the best method tested was ± 35% of true ...

Abstract Tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) is a cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous chronic and acute inflammatory conditions. In the present study, we have characterized the ability of TNFα in inducing eosinophil accumulation in rat skin and have shown the inhibitory effects of anti-α4 integrin and anti–vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) antibodies on this response. The intradermal injection of recombinant human TNFα induced a slowly developing, dose-dependent accumulation of ...

The closed neighbourhood of a vertex u of a graph G is u ∗ = {υ| υ is adjacent to u} ∪ {u} . G is neighbourhood-connected if it is connected, and G − u ∗ is connected but not complete, for all u in G . We consider neighbourhood-connected graphs G for which all G − u ∗ are minimally k -connected, for k = 1, 2, and 3. In particular, we allow G − u ∗ to be a cycle, wheel, or tree, and characterize the graphs G with this property.

Abstract Frontotemporal lobar degeneration with tau (FTLD-tau) is a group of tauopathies that underlie ∼50% of FTLD cases. Identification of genetic risk variants related to innate/adaptive immunity have highlighted a role for neuroinflammation and neuroimmune interactions in FTLD. Studies have shown microglial and astrocyte activation together with T cell infiltration in the brain of THY-Tau22 tauopathy mice. However, this remains to be confirmed in FTLD-tau patients. We conducted a detailed post- ...
