Objective: Age at onset of diagnostic motor manifestations in Huntington disease (HD) is strongly correlated with an expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat. The length of the normal CAG repeat allele has been reported also to influence age at onset, in interaction with the expanded allele. Due to profound implications for disease mechanism and modification, we tested whether the normal allele, interaction between the expanded and normal alleles, or presence of a second expanded allele affects age at onset of HD ...

In this work we perform mechanical stretching tests while monitoring optical and ionic transport properties of ion-intercalated semi-crystalline polyethylene-oxide (PEO) electrolytes in-situ. Utilizing ionic liquid (EMIBF4) – PEO electrolytes, we demonstrate a correlation between the degree of crystallinity, which depends on the ion concentration, and the Young's modulus, ultimate tensile strength, and yield stress. Upon stretching solid-state PEO electrolytes, we observe an anisotropic increase in ...

ABSTRACT American chestnut ( Castanea dentata [Marsh.] Borkh.) dominated the eastern forests of North America, serving as a keystone species both ecologically and economically until the introduction of the chestnut blight, Cryphonectria parasitica , functionally eradicated the species. Restoration efforts include genetic transformation utilizing genes such as oxalate oxidase to produce potentially blight-resistant chestnut trees that could be released back into the native range. However, before such ...

We demonstrate the electrochemical stability of nanostructured silicon in corrosive aqueous, organic, and ionic liquid media enabled by conformal few-layered graphene heterogeneous interfaces. We demonstrate direct gas-phase few-layered graphene passivation (d = 0.35 nm) at temperatures that preserve the structural integrity of the nanostructured silicon. This passivation technique is transferrable both to silicon nanoparticles (Si-NPs) as well as to electrochemically etched porous silicon (P-Si) materials. ...

Although Cases of testicular atrophy following exposure to ionizing radiations have been known since 1904 (1, 2) and were common in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings (3, 4), little is as yet known of the ultimate fate of this lesion in man. Research studies in verbal operant conditioning have recently been reviewed by Krasner (1958) and Salzinger (1959). These reviews indicate that numerous classes of verbal behavior have been found to be sensitive to a variety of reinforcing stimuli, both verbal and non-verbal. Verbal reinforcers used have, for the most part, been simple utterances, such as right, wrong, good, rnrn-hmm, see, fine, and other such terms denoting agreement or disagreement. Non-verbal reinforcers used have ranged from gestural ...

One hundred seventy-eight patients were enrolled in a placebo-controlled trial to evaluate three interferon-α preparations administered parenterally for the treatment of condyloma acuminatum. When all interferon groups were combined and compared with placebo, interferon recipients had greater rates ofcomplete, 75%, 50%, and 25% lesion resolution than did placebo recipients (P = .21, P = .14, P = .02, and P = .02, respectively). Rates of lesion resolution were higher among women than among men, and women were ...

Fura-2 AM is an esterified cell-permeant form of the Ca2+ indicator fura-2 (1-[2-(5-carboxyoxal-2-yl)-6-aminobenzofuran-5-oxyl]-2-(2′-amino-5′-methylphenoxy)-ethane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid). Fura-2 AM has been reported to be completely cleaved by cellular esterases to fura-2 which is trapped within cells and is used to measure intracellular free Ca2+ concentration by a fluorescence ratio method. Successful application of the method requires that fura-2 be the major cellular fluorescent metabolite ...
