Roentgenographic and anthropologic studies have shown a high incidence of spondylolysis in Eskimo populations. It is uncertain whether this is related to a genetic predisposition or to environmental factors. This study of recent roentgenograms and demographic characteristics of patients of the authors' institution notes a lower incidence in Eskimo populations than prior skeletal and roentgenographic studies. An attempt is made to quantitate the contributions of environmental factors and genetic ...

In an earlier study, normal adult men were shown to have increased plasma testosterone (T) levels over a several-hour period after haloperidol-induced increases in plasma PRL levels. The present study was designed both to replicate our first study and to examine the potential synergism of PRL and LH in influencing T levels on a short term basis in normal men. Eight volunteers received on 4 separate days an im injection of saline or 0.5 mg haloperidol at 1000 h and an iv injection of saline or 88 ...

Chronic stress is thought to lead to DNA damage, but the mechanisms involved are unclear. Here a molecular pathway is elucidated whereby stress-hormone activation of β2-adrenoreceptors triggers DNA damage and suppression of p53 levels through Gs-PKA and β-arrestin-1 signalling pathways. Cytosolic β-arrestin-1 facilitates activation of the E3 ligase Mdm2 by AKT, while nuclear β-arrestin-1 promotes Mdm2-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of p53. These results highlight the emerging role of β- ...

We present a new simulation environment for X-ray computed tomography, called CatSim. CatSim provides a research platform for GE researchers and collaborators to explore new reconstruction algorithms, CT architectures, and X-ray source or detector technologies. The main requirements for this simulator are accurate physics modeling, low computation times, and geometrical flexibility. CatSim allows simulating complex analytic phantoms, such as the FORBILD phantoms, including boxes, ellipsoids, elliptical ...

Sex/gender effects have been demonstrated for multiple aspects of addiction, with one of the most commonly cited examples being the "telescoping effect" where women meet criteria and/or seek treatment of substance use disorder (SUD) after fewer years of drug use as compared with men. This phenomenon has been reported for multiple drug classes including opioids, psychostimulants, alcohol, and cannabis, as well as nonpharmacological addictions, such as gambling. However, there are some inconsistent ...

Several theories have been proposed to account for variation in the intensity of life regrets. Variables hypothesized to affect the intensity of regret include: whether the regretted decision was an action or an inaction, the degree to which the decision was justified, and the life domain of the regret. No previous study has compared the effects of these key predictors in a single model in order to identify which are most strongly associated with the intensity of life regret. In this study, respondents ( ...

Chemical vapors originating from the explosive charge within landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) form a chemical "signature" unique to these devices. The fact that canines can detect this signature was a primary motivation for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Dog's Nose Program. One goal of this program was to develop electronic chemical sensors that mimic the canine's ability to detect landmines. The sensor described here, developed under this program, utilizes novel fluorescent ...
