Background: Mechanical periodontal therapy is the most common treatment of periodontal infections. It is directed primarily towards removing biofilm and calculus from the root surfaces, leading to ecological changes in the subgingival environment. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of scaling and root planing (SRP) on the subgingival microbiota of Brazilian subjects with untreated chronic periodontitis over a 9‐month period. Methods: Twenty‐five untreated chronic periodontitis ...

This research investigates the determinants of the capital structure of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) using a unique database that includes over 19,000 Brazilian firms and spans 13 years of data. The econometric analysis employs the System Generalized Method of Moments estimator (GMM-Sys) and two strong results emerge: (a) profitability is negatively related to leverage, and (b) asset growth is positively related to leverage. Both results are consistent with the pecking order theory of capital ...

Calcitriol, the bioactive hormone of vitamin D, is currently linked to several diseases, such as obesity and gain of adipose mass, due to its liposolubility and, consequently, its sequestration by adipocytes. As rates of obesity continue to increase, research on the biology of weight gain should be encouraged. This study evaluated the effects of calcitriol combined with CaCl2 on adipose tissue-derived human mesenchymal stem cells. We evaluated the cytotoxicity of the combination by MTT assays, in ...

The possibility of improving the signal-to-noise efficiency of NMR signal refocused by long-range dipolar interactions has been discussed recently [R.T. Branca, G. Galiana, W.S. Warren, Signal enhancement in CRAZED experiments, J. Magn. Reson. 187 (2007) 38–43]. For systems where T1 ≫ T2, by including an extra radio-frequency pulse in a standard CRAZED sequence, it is possible to increase the available signal by exploiting its sensitivity to T1 relaxation. Here, we use analytical calculations to investigate ...

We study the time evolution of surface pattern formation in a swelling spherical gel using proton nuclear magnetic resonance microimaging of water molecules migrating into the gel. Relaxation-weighted images permit mapping of the local evolution of the swelling ratio which, within the framework of a nonlinear poroelastic theory, can be identified with the determinant of the deformation gradient tensor. The wavelength of the surface pattern is examined and some analogies with the extensively studied ...

Abstract Studies in Argentina and Chile during 2010–2011 evaluated a new trap (Ajar) for monitoring the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck). The Ajar trap was delta‐shaped with a jar filled with a terpinyl acetate plus brown sugar bait attached to the bottom centre of the trap. The screened lid of the jar was inserted inside the trap, and moths were caught on a sticky insert surrounding the lid. The Ajar trap was evaluated with and without the addition of a sex pheromone lure and compared ...

Bacillus subtilis endospores have applications in different fields including their use as probiotics and antigen delivery vectors. The presence of long-range dipolar fields in liquids is known to introduce a non-linear term in the Bloch–Torrey equations which is responsible for many interesting effects in nuclear magnetic resonance as well as in magnetic resonance imaging. Galactomannan extracted from seeds of Cassia grandis with 0.1M NaCl, followed by ethanol precipitation, presented a yield of 36 ± 8%. The polysaccharide has a constant mannose/galactose ratio (2.44:1). Methylation analysis, one and two dimensional NMR spectroscopy confirmed that the polysaccharide has a central core composed of 4-linked β-mannose units, with branches of galactose, linked to the carbohydrate core through α(1-6) linkage. The amorphous nature of the galactomannan was confirmed by X-ray ...

The development of hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides was investigated by preparing mixtures of policaju/chitosan at weight ratios of 1:4 and 2:3. Utilizing dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques for these mixtures, an increase on the hydrodynamic particle radius was observed varying their pH from 3.0 to 12.0. Furthermore, a reduction of ζ-potential was also observed for the same pH interval. Following rounds of drying/hydration cycles at a specific pH value, hydrogel matrices were formed. ...
