Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) have attracted increasing attention for their high manufacturability, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties. In this work, graded Gyroid cellular structures (GCSs) with varying gradient directions were mathematically designed and manufactured via selective laser melting (SLM). The effect of gradients on manufacturing fidelity, i.e. degree of conformity between the manufactured part and engineering design, of these structures was investigated using X-ray ...

The activation of human prothrombin by the bacterial protein staphylocoagulase proceeds via the formation of a very stable equimolar complex.Unmasking of the active center in the prothrombin moiety of the complex is not caused by limited proteolysis. The kinetics of activation of human prothrombin by staphylocoagulase has been studied. The second order rate constant at pH 7.5, 37 "C, is 3.3 X lo6 M" s-'.This reaction rate is close to reported diffusion-controlled rates of protein-protein interaction. ...

Excavation works were carried out in Boom Clay to extend the underground research facility in Mol (Belgium) located at a depth of 223 m below the surface. The attempt to characterise the extent of the Excavation Damaged Zone, or EDZ, around the second shaft, using seismic measurements and cored borings, was successful, as proven by observations during further excavation works in the investigated area. No evidence for the occurrence of natural discontinuities was found. Using an industrial technique, ...

SUMMARY The morphogenesis of a gut from the endoderm has been well studied among the animal kingdom and is also well described in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans . But are there other ways to build a nematode intestine? Sulston et al. (1983) described a different intestinal cell lineage in the species Panagrellus redivivus and Turbatrix aceti that includes two programmed cell deaths. However, no details are known about the three‐dimensional (3D) configuration and the role of the cell deaths. Here, ...

The tricarboxylate carrier from rat liver mitochondria has been purified and reconstituted into phospholipid vesicles. Its activity has been characterized by both a radioactive citrate uptake assay and a coupled enzymatic assay. A Km of 40 microM and a Vmax of 1.56 mumol x min-1 x mg-1 have been determined for the carrier. Cholesterol levels of between 5-10% of total lipid content are shown to cause a decrease in carrier activity.

Using airborne drones to monitor water quality in inland, transitional or coastal surface waters is an emerging research field. Airborne drones can fly under clouds at preferred times, capturing data at cm resolution, filling a significant gap between existing in situ, airborne and satellite remote sensing capabilities. Suitable drones and lightweight cameras are readily available on the market, whereas deriving water quality products from the captured image is not straightforward; vignetting effects, ...

The occurrence of keyhole porosity in selective laser melting (SLM) has so far not been quantified systematically using X-ray computed tomography (X-CT). In this study, keyhole porosity in selective laser molten Ti-6Al-4V grade 23 parts was analyzed using post-process characterizations. Single tracks were produced with optimum, high volumetric energy density and low volumetric energy density parameters on the top of SLM substrate. High volumetric energy density was achieved by either (i) high laser ...

Computed tomography (CT) perfusion studies can provide valuable information regarding tumor vascularization. We report on a study assessing CT perfusion characteristics in the normal pancreas and in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.Twenty healthy subjects and 20 patients with histologically confirmed pancreatic adenocarcinoma were included in the study after written informed consent and approval by our institutional review board. All subjects underwent perfusion CT imaging of the pancreas ...

Neurotrophin treatment has so far failed to prolong the survival of individuals affected with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an incurable motoneuron degenerative disorder. Here we show that intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) delivery of recombinant vascular endothelial growth factor (Vegf) in a SOD1(G93A) rat model of ALS delays onset of paralysis by 17 d, improves motor performance and prolongs survival by 22 d, representing the largest effects in animal models of ALS achieved by protein delivery. ...

While additive manufacturing applications are progressing from rapid prototyping to the production of end-use products, the environmental impacts caused by these manufacturing processes and related material flows are still a rather open question. Therefore, this paper will provide an overview of available life cycle inventory data and compare the environmental impact caused by a series of additive manufacturing processes: selective laser melting, selective laser sintering, electron beam melting, ...

Survivors of childhood cancer are at risk of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity, which might be prevented by dexrazoxane. However, concerns exist about the safety of dexrazoxane, and little guidance is available on its use in children. To facilitate global consensus, a working group within the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group reviewed the existing literature and used evidence-based methodology to develop a guideline for dexrazoxane administration in ...

The synthesis of 8-thiocyano-ATP (CNS8-ATP) is described. At 37 degrees C the ATP analogue inactivates Na,K-ATPase, hexokinase, and pyruvate kinase. In all three cases, inactivation can be prevented by the addition of ATP, thus indicating that CNS8-ATP is recognized within the ATP binding site of the above enzymes. Incubation of the inactivated enzymes with dithiothreitol restores the catalytic activities. Therefore, it is likely that in these enzymes a mixed disulfide (E-S-S8-ATP) is formed between ...

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implied in the regulation of food intake. In the present study, we genotyped the Val66Met polymorphism in a Belgian cohort of 532 obese women and 197 healthy female controls and were, for the first time, able to show an association of the 66Met allele with obesity, at least in our female cohort.

Recently, genome-wide association studies have discovered several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) involved in the etiology of complex obesity. A variant downstream from the melanocortin-4 receptor gene (MC4R), a gene known to be involved in monogenic obesity, was reported to be highly associated with BMI. In the present study, we performed a replication study with the previously reported SNP rs17782313. We also included 3 tagSNPs (rs8087522, rs11872992, and rs1943226) for the MC4R gene region ...

Pneumoperitoneum, as used in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN), may result in negative effects on renal function in donor and recipient. This study compares long-term serum creatinine in donor and recipient after laparoscopic and open donor nephrectomy (ODN). A retrospective analysis of 120 LDN and 100 ODN donors and their recipients was performed. Serum creatinine of donor and recipient was recorded and analyzed. The follow-up period posttransplantation was 3 years. Serum creatinine in the recipients ...
