The objective of this study was to analyse the energy use by the dairy case-farm with un-insulated cowsheds in Estonia for the period of 2009-2010. The energy balance calculation includes the direct energy input of fuel, lubricants and electricity and the indirect input of forage, cereals, concentrates for young stock, dairy cattle and buildings. Energy outputs are milk, meat, and manure. The energy values were calculated multiplying the quantities of inputs and outputs by their energy conversion ...

The biogas yield of solid manure from dairy cattle depends on its quality and the proportion of excreta and organic litter material contained within. The biogas yield of both faeces and straw is available in literature. Straw is a common litter material of mixed farms. However, straw is scarcely available on dairy farms. Oat husks are appropriate to replace or supplement straw for use as litter material. In this study, the actual methane yield and the total methane potential of oat husks were determined. ...

Orientation of rat renal and intestinal brush-border membrane vesicles was studied with two independent methods: electron-microscopic freeze-fracture technique and immunological methods. With the freeze-fracture technique a distinct asymmetric distribution of particles on the two membrane fracture faces was demonstrated; this was used as a criterion for orientation of the isolated membrane vesicles. For the immunological approach the accessibility or inaccessibility of aminopeptidase M localized ...

Protein trafficking in and out of the nucleus represents a key step in controlling cell fate and function. Here we report the development of a red light-inducible and far-red light-reversible synthetic system for controlling nuclear localization of proteins in mammalian cells and zebrafish. First, we synthetically reconstructed and validated the red light-dependent Arabidopsis phytochrome B nuclear import mediated by phytochrome-interacting factor 3 in a nonplant environment and support current ...

Abstract Altered aquaporin 5 ( AQP5 ) expression in immune cells impacts on key mechanisms of inflammation and is associated with sepsis survival. Since epigenetic regulation via DNA methylation might contribute to a differential AQP5 expression in sepsis, we tested the hypotheses that DNA methylation of the AQP5 promotor (1) influences AQP5 expression, (2) is associated with the 30-day survival of septic patients, and (3) alters the nuclear transcription factor NF-κB binding. AQP5 mRNA expression was ...

Objective We used the orally available endothelin A (ETA) receptor antagonist darusentan to characterize interactions between the major blood pressure-regulating systems in healthy men. Mediators of the endothelin system, the sympathetic nervous system, and the renin-angiotensin system act via G protein-coupled receptors with a possible involvement of the G-protein β3 subunit (GNB3) C825T polymorphism. We studied the influence of this polymorphism on the responses to ETA antagonism in the presence ...

It is known that moxonidine acts as an agonist at presynaptic alpha(2)-adrenoceptors of the postganglionic sympathetic nerve terminals and leads to a reduction in noradrenaline release. In addition, it is conceivable that I(1)-binding sites located in other regions of the pre- and postganglionic sympathetic neurons are involved in this effect. Our aim was to investigate whether and to what extent activation of the I(1)-binding sites contributes to the moxonidine-induced inhibition of noradrenaline ...

Summary The influence of smectite colloids on the migration behaviour of U(VI), Th(IV), Pu(IV), Am(III), Np(V), Sr(II) and Cs(I) is investigated within the Colloid and Radionuclide Retardation experiment (CRR). Two in situ experiments in a well-characterized granitic fracture zone are carried out in presence and absence of bentonite colloids. Radionuclide retardation observed in the field studies increases in the sequence Np(V)∼U(VI)<Sr(II)<Cs(I), where a small fraction of colloid borne breakthrough ...

Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and AQP5 expression may impact on key mechanisms in sepsis. However, it is unclear whether these AQPs are expressed to an equal extent or regulated differentially. Accordingly, we investigated the time-dependent expression of AQP1 and AQP5 following stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in cultured human THP-1 cells and in the lungs of mice injected with LPS. Furthermore, we tested the hypothesis that the β2 adrenoreceptor agonist terbutaline or its downstream effector cyclic ...

Single crystal silver wires can be grown at the nitrobenzene|water interface when silver ions dissolved in the aqueous phase are reduced by decamethyl ferrocene dissolved in the nitrobenzene phase. The successful growth of these wires depends on a number of experimental conditions, most prominently on the concentration ratio of reactants, nucleation rates, shape of formed nuclei, and wettability of nuclei. The size–time dependence can be modeled on the basis of microelectrode behavior of the silver ...

Ion traps have become an important and powerful tool in many fields of analytical chemistry. The immanent sensitivity of the device and the ability to perform MSn opens a wide variety of experimental setups even at very low sample concentration levels. Modern and intelligent instrument control is of particular importance. The spread of ion trap mass spectrometry will greatly enhance the amount of data generated by LC-MS laboratories. The ability to handle and screen the flood of information puts ...

In ENPOS (Energy Positive Farm) project possibilities to save energy on Estoni an and Finnish farms was studied. Energy can be saved easily and without large financial costs 10 -30%. The most important thing is to increase the energy knowledge of the farmers. This means advisory work and energy education. Energy bookkeeping and energy analysis are important things in energy consumption follow- up. The farm energy consumption should be followed and with this acquired knowledge farmers can notice where ...

Objective A C825T polymorphism has been identified for the gene encoding the G-protein β3 subunit (GNB3). The 825T allele is associated with hypertension and obesity, which in turn are closely linked with resistance to the metabolic and vascular effects of insulin. We hypothesized that venodilation in response to insulin would be impaired in GNB3 825T-allele carriers. Because vasodilatory properties of insulin are mainly mediated by nitric oxide, we also investigated the influence of the T−786C polymorphism ...

Arterial stiffening is the major cause of increasing systolic blood pressure in arterial hypertension. Increased arterial stiffness is one major mechanism responsible for morbidity and mortality in hypertension. A C825T polymorphism was identified in the gene encoding the G-protein β3 subunit (GNB3), and an association of the T-allele with hypertension was demonstrated in several studies. In order to identify a pathogenetic link between hypertension and arterial stiffness, we compared two indices ...

The ultimate mode of action by which nitroglycerin elicits vasodilation remains elusive. Animal studies point to an involvement of pertussis toxin-sensitive G proteins. The 825T allele of the GNB3 C825T polymorphism in the gene encoding the G protein beta3 subunit is associated with enhanced signal transduction via pertussis toxin-sensitive pathways in vitro. We hypothesized that G proteins have a role in nitroglycerin-mediated vasodilation and that carriers of the 825T allele would exhibit a stronger ...
