Drawing on Miriam Shlesinger’s seminal paper on the creation and use of corpora in Interpreting Studies research, which she referred to as an offshoot of corpus-based translation studies (CTS) (Shlesinger 1998), and on Setton’s chapter presenting an overview and prospects of Corpus-based Interpreting Studies (CIS) (Setton 2011), this chapter takes stock of nearly two decades of CIS and looks at the extent to which this offshoot has flourished in three areas of interpreting, namely research, education, ...

Can supportive, sociable and meaningful relations be maintained online? Will life online replace, complement, or supplant life in the flesh? Netville is a residential development located in suburban Toronto equipped with a high-speed network as part of its design. The clustering of homes within this area allowed us to study the social networks, civic involvement, Internet use, and attitudes of residents. We are interested in how living in a residential community equipped with no cost, very high ...

In this paper, we present an adaptive architecture for the transport of VoIP traffic over heterogeneous wired/wireless Internet environments. This architecture uses a VoIP gateway associated with an 802.11e QoS enhanced access point (QAP) to transcode voice flows before their transmissions over the wireless channel. The instantaneous bit rate is determined by a control mechanism based on the estimation of channel congestion state. Our mechanism dynamically adapts audio codec bit rate using a congestion ...

This paper considers the fundamental problem of key agreement among a group of parties communicating over an insecure public network. Over the years, a number of solutions to this problem have been proposed with varying degrees of complexity. However, there seems to have been no previous systematic look at the growing problem of key agreement over combined wired and wireless networks, consisting of both high-performance computing machines and low-power mobile devices. In this paper we present an ...

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) technology has great potential to revolutionize many science and engineering domains. We present a novel environmental monitoring system with a focus on the overall system architecture for seamless integration of wired and wireless sensors for long-term, remote, and near-real-time monitoring. We also present a unified framework for sensor data collection, management, visualization, dissemination, and exchange, conforming to the new Sensor Web Enablement standard. Some ...
