Although inosine has been used clinically to support the myocardium, no data are available on the fate of exogenous inosine in the human heart. We therefore infused six patients, catheterised for coronary angiography, with inosine (5 mg·kg−1·min−1 intravenously) for 6 minutes. Before infusion, the arterio-venous difference of inosine, hypoxanthine and xanthine across the heart was nil. During infusion, arterial inosine increased substantially, exceeding the coronary sinus concentration by a maximum ...

FRP bars are used in concrete structures as an alternative to steel bars as they have many advantages such as high tensile strength, high strength-to-weight ratio, electromagnetic neutrality, lightweight and no corrosion. There is a perceived lack of standard regulations for the design of concrete columns with FRP reinforcement, e.g., in Eurocode 2. This paper describes a procedure for predicting the bearing capacity of concrete columns with FRP reinforcement based on the interaction of axial force ...

This paper deals with the digital signal processing in the application of a modern radar receiver. The influence of the signal discretization and its side effects on radar performance are considered. In particular, the paper presents the problem of the random displacement effect of LFM (linear frequency modulation) radar echo pulse beginning in accordance with the closest discrete time value. This effect has an impact on the characteristics of the pulse compression filter output signal. Its equivalence ...

Witold Czarnecki,

Very often computer simulation is practically the only method of image processing studies. To organize a simulation experiment one ought to have efficient simulation algorithms of random image components. Textures form a very important class of such components. They have a specific structure which can be described by their marginal probability distributions and correlations. The coloured spectrum and non-gaussian nature make the simulation of image textures rather difficult. This paper presents ...

The aim of the study was to verify two hypotheses. The first concerned the possibility of diagnostic dermoscopic differentiation between cutaneous melanomas of the histopathological category in situ (pTis) and thin melanomas (pT1a) in terms of their diameter. The second assessed the diagnostic feasibility of two dermoscopic algorithms aiming to detect ≤ 5.0 mm-sized melanomas histopathologically confirmed as pTis and pT1a.Dermoscopic images of consecutive cases of histopathologically confirmed melanomas ...

This tutorial-style article presents the novel concept of time-reversal-based airborne ground penetrating radar (TR-AGPR) and its application for soil imaging and gives a brief description of the time-reversal synthetic aperture radar SAR (TRSAR) focusing algorithm. The intent of this article is to answer the question as to whether the time-reversal based algorithm is a feasible technique for SAR focusing of a buried target (structure).

Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) is a well known technique used for dealing with clutter in order to detect moving targets. This technique was derived under assumption, that clutter has Gaussian characteristics. Unfortunately when dealing with sea clutter, Gaussian assumption is no longer valid [1]. This causes increased number of false alarms. In this paper we present improved detector to deal with non-Gaussian clutter. Detector was derived from Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT), assuming ...

The selected applications of the surface acoustic wave devices in the area of the signal processing are presented. In the analysis based on the spectral theory, the metallization coefficient of the strips is taken into account. It influences the change of the surface wave velocity of the open and short-circuited strips. The synthesis of the dispersive line based on the theoretical analysis results is presented. The experimental characteristics for the quartz based dispersive line as an application ...

Although the role of melanoma risk factors is well documented, their correlation with patients' age is less frequently analyzed. The analysis was performed among 189 melanoma patients in different age groups, including 60 years, to investigate the risk factors, topography, and coexistence of morphological features of 209 melanomas (dermoscopic and histopathological).Among the youngest age group, no correlation with the presence of estimated risk factors was found. The most common dermoscopic pattern ...

Huntington's disease (HD) is a rare, incurable neurodegenerative disorder where fast and non-invasive diagnosis targeting patients' condition plays a crucial role. In modern medicine, various scientific areas are being combined, such as computing, medicine and biomedical engineering. This survey is focused on the most recent image processing methods applied not only for the purpose of diagnosing HD but also for the assessment of its progression severity, in order to contribute to the effort to prolong ...

Abstract Background and Aims It has been reported that patients without standard modifiable cardiovascular (CV) risk factors (SMuRFs—diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, and smoking) presenting with first myocardial infarction (MI), especially women, have a higher in-hospital mortality than patients with risk factors, and possibly a lower long-term risk provided they survive the post-infarct period. This study aims to explore the long-term outcomes of SMuRF-less patients with stable coronary artery ...
