Pediatric- (age at diagnosis younger than 17 years) and elderly-onset CD patients (age at diagnosis 60 years or older) from a prospective population-based registry (EPIMAD) were recruited. Abstract Introduction Most studies of elderly-onset Crohn’s disease [CD; diagnosed in patients aged 60 or over] have described a mild course. However, data on the natural history of perianal fistulising CD [pfCD] in this population are scarce. In a population-based cohort study, we described the prevalence, natural history, and treatment of pfCD in patients with elderly-onset CD vs patients with paediatric-onset CD. Method All patients diagnosed with CD at or after the age of 60 between 1988 and 2006, ...

Abstract Apelin is a bioactive peptide involved in the control of energy metabolism. In the hypothalamus, chronic exposure to high levels of apelin is associated with an increase in hepatic glucose production, and then contributes to the onset of type 2 diabetes. However, the molecular mechanisms behind deleterious effects of chronic apelin in the brain and consequences on energy expenditure and thermogenesis are currently unknown. We aimed to evaluate the effects of chronic intracerebroventricular ( ...

In this experimental investigation, we explore the feasibility of using wide-field illumination for time-resolved fluorescence molecular tomography. The performance of wide-field patterns with a time-resolved imaging platform is investigated in vitro and in a small animal model. A Monte Carlo-based forward model is employed to reconstruct fluorescence yield based on time-gated datasets. An improvement in resolution and quantification when using the time-gate data type compared to the commonly used ...

This investigation explores the feasibility of performing diffuse optical tomography based on time-domain wide-field illumination and detection strategies. Wide-field patterned excitation and detection schemes are investigated in transmittance geometry with time-gated detection channels. A Monte Carlo forward model is employed to compute the time-resolved Jacobians for rigorous light propagation modeling. We demonstrate both in silico and experimentally that reconstructions of absorption structures ...

Both industrial and biochemical ammonia syntheses are thought to rely on the cooperation of multiple metals in breaking the strong triple bond of dinitrogen. Such multimetallic cooperation for dinitrogen cleavage is also the general rule for dinitrogen reductive cleavage with molecular systems and surfaces. We have observed cleavage of dinitrogen at 250 degrees C and atmospheric pressure by dihydrogen on isolated silica surface-supported tantalum(III) and tantalum(V) hydride centers [(identical with ...

Light propagation in tissue is known to be favored in the Near Infrared spectral range. Capitalizing on this fact, new classes of molecular contrast agents are engineered to fluoresce in the Near Infrared. The potential of these new agents is vast as it allows tracking non-invasively and quantitatively specific molecular events in-vivo. However, to monitor the bio-distribution of such compounds in thick tissue proper physical models of light propagation are necessary. To recover 3D concentrations ...

The purpose of this study is to understand and to compare the pressure effects on the collision‐induced dissociation (CID) spectrum pattern recorded using triple quadrupole instruments. It is often unclear why some genetic mutations to a given gene contribute to neurological disorders and others do not. For instance, two mutations have previously been found to produce a dominant negative for TRESK, a two-pore-domain K+ channel implicated in migraine: TRESK-MT, a 2-bp frameshift mutation, and TRESK-C110R. Both mutants inhibit TRESK, but only TRESK-MT increases sensory neuron excitability and is linked to migraine. Here, we identify a new mechanism, termed frameshift mutation-induced ...

Head and neck melanomas (HNMs) are frequent and have a poorer prognosis than melanomas at other sites. Photoprotection in these locations is difficult. In this population-based study of 279 HNMs diagnosed in a French region between 2004 and 2009, major differences were found between genders. A clearcut, sex-related distribution was found between a "peripheral" area (scalp, forehead, temples, ears, and neck) and a "central" one (other parts of the face), with 56.7% of HNMs being located in the peripheral ...

Clinicians increasingly require short, efficient methods for assessing distress, both in applied research and clinical settings. Most of the available questionnaires are unsuitable for busy clinical settings. The visual analogue scale (VAS) is widely but empirically used to assess perceived stress. To provide evidence on two of the psychometric properties of the VAS: its discriminative sensitivity (capacity to highlight a difference between groups) and its interconcept validity (the relationship between ...
