Many kinds of solid tumour have heterogeneously a hypoxic environment. Tumour hypoxia reported to be associated with more aggressive tumour phenotypes such as high metastatic ability and resistance to various anti-cancer therapies which may lead to a poorer prognosis. However, the mechanisms by which hypoxia affects the aggressive phenotypes remain unclear. We established a scirrhous gastric carcinoma cell line (OCUM-12) from ascites associated with scirrhous gastric carcinoma, and a hypoxia-resistant ...

In this study, we designed and developed a compact electrolyzer for the evaluation of components in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. First, this electrolyzer features a precise pressure-control system that controls the active electrode area and facilitates setting the desired clamping pressure. This mechanism makes it possible to optimize the electrolyzer performance. Second, it has two reference electrodes that are connected on the faces of the active electrode area of the anode ...

AIM:To evaluate the effectiveness of trimodal imaging endoscopy (TME) to detect another lesion after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for superficial gastric neoplasia (SGN). METHODS:Surveillance esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) using a TME was conducted in 182 patients that had undergone ESD for SGN.Autofluorescence imaging (AFI) was conducted after white-light imaging (WLI).When SGN was suspicious, magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) was conducted.Final diagnoses were made by ...

In order to detect Earth-like planets around nearby red dwarfs (in particular late-M stars), it is crucial to conduct precise radial velocity measurements at near-infrared wavelengths where these stars emit most of the light. We have been developing the Infrared Doppler (IRD) spectrograph which is a high dispersion spectrograph for the Subaru telescope. To achieve 1m/s RV measurement precision, we have developed a direct generation of laser frequency comb (LFC) that uses high-repetition-rate pump pulse ...

We have isolated a hair-follicle-specific gene, termed hacl-1, from a cDNA library of ICR mouse skin. Hacl-1 is expressed specifically in skin, and its mRNA level is correlated with the active state of hair follicles in developmental and regenerative processes of hair. Its mRNA is approximately 1 kilobase pairs (kb). Its cDNA was completely co-linear with the genomic clone, indicating that the hacl-1 gene is composed of one exon. The hacl-1 gene has an open reading frame of 579 base pairs (bp). The ...

Fibroblasts, particularly myofibroblasts, affect the malignant progression of cancer cells in vitro. However, to date few reports have addressed the clinical significance of myofibroblasts in the gastric cancer microenvironment. This study examined the correlation between myofibroblast expression and clinicopathological features in gastric carcinoma. A total of 265 primary gastric tumors resected by gastrectomy were stained with antibodies against α-smooth muscle actin and vimentin. Stromal cells ...

We propose a novel supercontinuum (SC) generation technology using an optical pulse synthesizer and highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber. The optical pulse synthesizer enables us to reshape seed pulses optimized for broadband SC generation. 25.0 and 12.5 GHz SC combs were successfully generated by propagating synthesized seed pulses in the highly nonlinear fiber. We investigated how seed pulse conditions including shape, peak power, repetition rate, and center wavelength affect SC spectral bandwidth. ...

Myofibroblasts in the cancer microenvironment have recently been implicated in tumour growth and metastasis of gastric cancer. However, the mechanisms responsible for the regulation of myofibroblasts in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) remain unclear. This study was performed to clarify the mechanisms for regulation of myofibroblasts in gastric cancer microenvironment. Two CAFs (CaF-29 and CaF-33) from the tumoural gastric wall and a normal fibroblast (NF-29) from the nontumoural gastric wall, ...

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early stage gastric cancer (EGC) has improved the success rate of en bloc resection but results in perforation more often than does endoscopic mucosal resection. We report a novel technique of ESD using an external grasping forceps. A total of 265 lesions with EGC or gastric adenoma were enrolled in this study. Sixteen lesions were located in the upper third portion of the stomach, 114 in the middle third portion, and 135 in the lower third portion. After ...

We generated a 12.5-GHz-spacing optical frequency comb that can be resolved over 100 THz, from 1040 to 1750 nm, without spectral mode filtering. To cover such a broad spectrum, we used electro-optic modulation of single frequency light and line-by-line pulse synthesis to produce a clear pulse train and subsequent spectral broadening in highly nonlinear fibers (HNLFs). We numerically and experimentally investigated a configuration of the HNLFs and find that a two-stage broadening through different ...

To suppress nonlinear effects in optical fibers, we propose phase only pulses (POPs) that exhibit constant amplitude and pulse-shaped phase waveforms and investigate a method of generating these pulses. POPs with two phase waveforms, i.e., sech2- and Gaussian-shaped phase waveforms, are synthesized using an optical pulse synthesizer (OPS). Feedback control of the OPS allows for adjustment of the phase spectra and realization of temporally constant amplitudes and pulse-shaped phase waveforms.

Abstract Refractory angina is an independent predictor of adverse events in patients with vasospastic angina (VSA). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between coronary lumen complexity and refractory symptoms in patients with VSA. Seventeen patients with VSA underwent optical coherence tomography. The patients were divided into the refractory VSA group (n = 9) and the stable VSA group (n = 8). A shoreline development index was used to assess the coronary artery lumen complexity. ...

Although persistent excessive actions of aldosterone have unfavorable effects on the cardiovascular system, primarily via mineralocorticoid receptor (MR)-dependent pathways, the pathophysiological significance of aldosterone cascade activation in heart diseases has not yet been fully clarified. We herein examined the effects of short-term aldosterone stimulation at a physiological dose on cardiac function during ischemia–reperfusion injury (IRI). In order to study the effects of aldosterone preconditioning, ...

The multi-gigahertz frequency comb-based interferometer exhibits only the interference amplitude peak without the phase fringes, which can produce a rapid axial scan for full-field profilometry and tomography. Despite huge technical advantages, there remain problems that the interference intensity undulations occurred depending on the interference phase. To avoid such problems, we propose a compensation technique of the interference signals using two frequency combs with slightly varied center wavelengths. ...

Intestinal fibrosis with stricture formation is a severe complication of Crohn's disease (CD). Though new therapeutic targets to enable the prevention or treatment of intestinal fibrosis are needed, markers of this condition and the basic mechanisms responsible have not been established. NADPH oxidase (NOX) 4 has already been reported to play a key role in models of fibrogenesis, including that of the lung. However, its importance in intestinal fibrogenesis remains unclear. In this study, we examined ...
