A C–Si bonded SiO2/diamond interface is formed under a SiO2 mask during the selective diamond growth at a high temperature in a H2 atmosphere including methane (5%). A few monolayers with C–Si bonding at the SiO2/diamond surface are confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the C1s and Si2p core levels from 290 eV to 271 eV and 107 eV–95 eV, respectively. In addition, secondary ion mass spectroscopy results suggest that the C–Si bonds, and not C–H bonds, are majority at the interface ...

Tumor-selective accumulation of gold nanorods (GNR) has been demonstrated for visualization of tumor hypoxia by photoacoustic imaging. We prepared GNRs with hypoxia-targeting nitroimidazole units (G-NI) on their surface. Biological experiments revealed that G-NI produced a strong photoacoustic signal in hypoxic tumor cells and tissues.

Abstract We developed new 10 B carriers for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) that can effectively transport and accumulate boron clusters into cells. These carriers consist of a lipopeptide, mercaptoundecahydrododecaborate (BSH), and a disulfide linker. The carriers were conceived according to the structure of pepducin, a membrane‐penetrating lipopeptide targeting protease‐activated receptor 1 (PAR1). To improve the membrane permeability of BSH, the structure was optimized using various lipopeptides ...

Abstract Background The African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis , is widely used in studies of oogenesis, meiotic cell cycle and early embryonic development. However, in order to perform such studies, eggs are normally collected after the injection of hCG into the dorsal lymph sac of fully-grown female frogs following pre-injection of PMSF. Although this protocol is established and used as standard laboratory approach, there are some concerns over whether the injections could cause the transmission of ...

In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), renal cyst lesions predominantly arise from collecting ducts (CDs). However, relevant CD cyst models using human cells are lacking. Although previous reports have generated in vitro renal tubule cyst models from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), therapeutic drug candidates for ADPKD have not been identified. Here, by establishing expansion cultures of hiPSC-derived ureteric bud tip cells, an embryonic precursor that gives rise to ...

Abstract Yam is a collective name of tuber crops belonging to the genus Dioscorea . Yam is important not only as a staple food crop but also as an integral component of society and culture of the millions of people who depend on it. However, due to its regional importance, yam has long been regarded as an “orphan crop” lacking a due global attention. Although this perception is changing with recent advances in genomics technologies, domestication processes of most yam species are still ambiguous. This ...

Abstract The phosphorescence emission of ruthenium complexes was applied to the optical imaging of physiological hypoxia. We prepared three complexes with hydrophobic substituents on the phenanthroline ligand and characterized their emission, which was quenched by molecular oxygen. Among the complexes synthesized in this study, a pyrene chromophore‐linked ruthenium complex, Ru‐Py, exhibited optimal properties for the imaging of hypoxia; the prolonged lifetime of the triplet excited state of the ...

Abstract Fixed drug eruption is a common cutaneous adverse reaction in young patients with a characteristic clinical appearance. However, the diagnosis and identification of the substance may be difficult if food or food additives provoke the fixed eruption. A 26‐year‐old man had a history of two episodes of cutaneous erythema with residual pigmentation. Close examination of the history including his diet in addition to an oral challenge test and patch testing led to the diagnosis of fixed eruption ...

Marek disease (MD) is a viral disease characterized by the development of lymphoma in poultry. Although morphologic confirmation of lymphoma is used to diagnose MD, immunohistochemical detection of MD virus-EcoRI-Q (Meq), which is a viral protein that is expressed exclusively in MD tumor cells, would further improve the accuracy of diagnosis. We developed monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that specifically detect Meq by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) sections. We ...

The arms race between parasitic sequences and their hosts is a major driving force for evolution of gene control systems. Since transposable elements (TEs) are potentially deleterious, eukaryotes silence them by epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation. Little is known about how TEs counteract silencing to propagate during evolution. Here, we report behavior of sequence-specific anti-silencing proteins used by Arabidopsis TEs and evolution of those proteins and their target sequences. We show ...

The effects of imeglimin, a novel antidiabetes agent, on β-cell function remain unclear. Here, we unveiled the impact of imeglimin on β-cell survival. Treatment with imeglimin augmented mitochondrial function, enhanced insulin secretion, promoted β-cell proliferation, and improved β-cell survival in mouse islets. Imeglimin upregulated the expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-related molecules, including Chop (Ddit3), Gadd34 (Ppp1r15a), Atf3, and Sdf2l1, and decreased eIF2α phosphorylation after ...

Restoration of tissue homeostasis by controlling stem cell aging is a promising therapeutic approach for geriatric disorders. The molecular mechanisms underlying age-related dysfunctions of specific types of adult tissue stem cells (TSCs) have been studied, and various microRNAs were recently reported to be involved. However, the central roles of microRNAs in stem cell aging remain unclear. Interest in this area was sparked by murine heterochronic parabiosis experiments, which demonstrated that systemic ...

Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) representation of a tumor with respect to its size, shape, location, and boundaries is still a challenge in photoacoustic (PA) imaging using artificial contrast agents as probes. We carried out PA imaging of tumors in mice using 800RS-PMPC, which was obtained by coupling of 800RS, a near-infrared cyanine dye, with PMPC, a highly selective tumor-targeting methacrylate polymer having phosphorylcholine side chains, as a probe. The conjugate 800RS-PMPC forms compact nanoparticles ( ...

Indole-3-acetamide (IAM) is the first confirmed auxin biosynthetic intermediate in some plant pathogenic bacteria. Exogenously applied IAM or production of IAM by overexpressing the bacterial iaaM gene in Arabidopsis causes auxin overproduction phenotypes. However, it is still inconclusive whether plants use IAM as a key precursor for auxin biosynthesis. Herein, we reported the isolation IAM HYDROLASE 1 (IAMH1) gene in Arabidopsis from a forward genetic screen for IAM-insensitive mutants that display ...

Abstract Transposable elements (TEs) are among the most dynamic parts of genomes. Since TEs are potentially deleterious, eukaryotes silence them through epigenetic mechanisms such as repressive histone modifications and DNA methylation. We previously reported that Arabidopsis TEs, called VANDAL s, counteract epigenetic silencing through a group of sequence‐specific anti‐silencing proteins, VANCs. VANC proteins bind to noncoding regions of specific VANDAL copies and induce loss of silent chromatin ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a most common dementia in elderly people. Since AD symptoms resemble those of other neurodegenerative diseases, including idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), it is difficult to distinguish AD from iNPH for a precise and early diagnosis. iNPH is caused by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and involves gait disturbance, urinary incontinence, and dementia. iNPH is treatable with shunt operation which removes accumulated CSF from the brain ventricles. ...

The reactions 11Li+CD2→10He+X and 11Li+C→10He+X at a beam energy of 61A MeV have been studied by measuring the triple coincidence of 8He and two neutrons. Experimental data show a peak that can be explained as a resonance 10He, which is unbound by 1.2±0.3 MeV and its width is less than 1.2 MeV. Theinvariant mass spectra of 8He+n show a peak that is consistent with the decay 10He→8He+n+n.
