A 5,000-L anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) fed with actual municipal wastewater was employed to study the impact of temperature drops on methanogenic performance and membrane fouling. With temperature dropped from 25 °C to 15 °C, the methane yield decreased from 0.244 to 0.205 NL-CH4/g-CODremoval and the dissolved methane increased from 29% to 43%, resulted in the methanogenic performance reduced by 25%. The membrane rejection offset the deteriorated anaerobic digestion at low temperatures and ...

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is caused by combined genetic and environmental factors. Genetic heritability in ASD is estimated as 60–90%, and genetic investigations have revealed many monogenic factors. We analyzed 405 patients with ASD using family-based exome sequencing to detect disease-causing single-nucleotide variants (SNVs), small insertions and deletions (indels), and copy number variations (CNVs) for molecular diagnoses. All candidate variants were validated by Sanger sequencing or quantitative ...

A pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) integrated with a one-stage partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) reactor was operated for the treatment of municipal wastewater (MWW) at seasonal temperatures of 15-25 °C. The removal efficiencies of COD and total nitrogen (TN) were always > 90% and > 75% respectively. The methanogenesis and PN/A were identified as the primary removal pathways of COD and TN, respectively, and were suppressed at low temperatures. With the temperature dropped from 25 °C to 20 ° ...

Recently, it was reported that for synthetic low-strength wastewater, the excellent nitrogen removal rate (NRR) accompanied with phosphorus removal could be achieved through the partial nitritation/anammox (PNA)-hydroxyapatite (HAP) process. Thus, this research further investigated the performance of the pilot-scale PNA-HAP process treating the effluent of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) fed with the actual municipal wastewater. The results showed that with the hydraulic retention time of 4. ...

Partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) is a promising deammonification process to develop energy-neutral wastewater treatment plants. However, the mainstream application of PN/A still faces the challenges of low nitrogen concentration and low temperatures, and has not been studied under a realistic condition of large-scale reactor (kiloliter level), real municipal wastewater (MWW) and seasonal temperatures. In this research, a pilot-scale one-stage PN/A, with integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) ...

In Qinghai Province, the Brassica campestris L. pollen preparation Qianlie Kang Pule'an Tablet (QKPT) is traditionally used for BPH therapy. However, in QKPT the content of supposedly active phytosterols is relatively low at 2.59%, necessitating high doses for successful therapy. Therefore, a phytosterol enriched (4.54%) refined extract of B. campestris pollen (PE) was developed and compared with QKPT in a BPH rat model. Six groups of rats (n=8 each), namely sham-operated distilled water control, castrated ...

The characteristics of hydrogen fermentation in a membrane bioreactor (HF-MBR) fed with food waste were investigated at thermophilic condition. The HF-MBR was operated at three different organic loading rates (OLRs) of 70.2, 89.4 and 125.4 kg-COD/m3/day. Biogas production rate increased from 22.4 to 32.8 and 62.5 l/day with OLR. The maximum Hydrogen yield and production rate were 111.1 mL-H2/g-VS added and 10.7 l-H2/L/day at an OLR of 125.4 kg-COD/m3/day. The total carbohydrate degradation was better ...

The renormalization factors of the dimension-six effective operators for proton decay are evaluated at two-loop level in the supersymmetric grand unified theories. For this purpose, we use the previous results in which the quantum corrections to the effective Kahler potential are evaluated at two-loop level. Numerical values for the factors are presented in the case of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified model. We also derive a simple formula for the one-loop renormalization factors ...

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a lipid mediator that plays important roles in diverse cellular functions such as cell proliferation, differentiation and migration. S1P is synthesized inside the cells and subsequently released to the extracellular space, where it binds to specific receptors that are located on the plasma membranes of target cells. Accumulating recent evidence suggests that S1P transporters including SPNS2 mediate S1P release from the cells and are involved in the physiological functions ...

Magnesium rechargeable batteries (MRBs) promise to be the next post lithium-ion batteries that can help meet the increasing demand for high-energy, cost-effective, high-safety energy storage devices. Early prototype MRBs that use molybdenum-sulfide cathodes have low terminal voltages, requiring the development of oxide-based cathodes capable of overcoming the sulfide's low Mg2+ conductivity. Here, we fabricate an ultraporous (>500 m2 g–1) and ultrasmall (<2.5 nm) cubic spinel MgMn2O4 (MMO) by a freeze- ...

Poor processing stability has been cited as the fatal shortcoming of the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating starch wastewater (SW). In this study, the SW treatment performance in a one-stage UASB reactor and a pre-acidification equipped UASB process were evaluated together with the microbial dynamics. The results revealed that the pre-acidification provided improvements in terms of the substrate utilization diversity and the stability of the microbial community structure on the ...

The aim of this work was to demonstrate the operation of a large pilot-scale submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (5.0 m3) for biogas production from municipal wastewater at ambient temperature of 25 °C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest one-stage submerged AnMBR that has ever been reported. This AnMBR realized a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h and a treatment capacity of 20 m3 d-1, obtaining excellent effluent quality with COD removal efficiency over 90% and BOD5 removal over ...

We report first-principles calculations that reveal the atomic forms, stability, and energy levels of carbon-related defects in SiC (0001)/SiO$_{\rm 2}$ systems. We clarify the stable position (SiC side, SiO$_{\rm 2}$ side, or just at the SiC/SiO$_{\rm 2}$ interface) of defects depending on the oxidation environment. Under an O-rich condition, the di-carbon antisite ((C$_{\rm 2}$)$_{\rm Si}$) in the SiC side is stable and critical for $n$-channel MOSFETs, whereas the di-carbon defect (Si-C-C-Si) at the ...
