A 5,000-L anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) fed with actual municipal wastewater was employed to study the impact of temperature drops on methanogenic performance and membrane fouling. With temperature dropped from 25 °C to 15 °C, the methane yield decreased from 0.244 to 0.205 NL-CH4/g-CODremoval and the dissolved methane increased from 29% to 43%, resulted in the methanogenic performance reduced by 25%. The membrane rejection offset the deteriorated anaerobic digestion at low temperatures and ...

A pilot-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) integrated with a one-stage partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) reactor was operated for the treatment of municipal wastewater (MWW) at seasonal temperatures of 15-25 °C. The removal efficiencies of COD and total nitrogen (TN) were always > 90% and > 75% respectively. The methanogenesis and PN/A were identified as the primary removal pathways of COD and TN, respectively, and were suppressed at low temperatures. With the temperature dropped from 25 °C to 20 ° ...

Recently, it was reported that for synthetic low-strength wastewater, the excellent nitrogen removal rate (NRR) accompanied with phosphorus removal could be achieved through the partial nitritation/anammox (PNA)-hydroxyapatite (HAP) process. Thus, this research further investigated the performance of the pilot-scale PNA-HAP process treating the effluent of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) fed with the actual municipal wastewater. The results showed that with the hydraulic retention time of 4. ...

Partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) is a promising deammonification process to develop energy-neutral wastewater treatment plants. However, the mainstream application of PN/A still faces the challenges of low nitrogen concentration and low temperatures, and has not been studied under a realistic condition of large-scale reactor (kiloliter level), real municipal wastewater (MWW) and seasonal temperatures. In this research, a pilot-scale one-stage PN/A, with integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) ...

At ambient temperature condition, the one-stage partial nitritation/anammox (PNA) process has been successfully adopted to treat the filtrate from the mainstream anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). However, there is no investigation of the performance of this process at low-temperature condition. In this study, the nitrogen removal performance of a pilot-scale PNA reactor at the temperature of 15 °C for treating the filtrate of a mainstream AnMBR was investigated. The nitrogen removal rate of 0. ...

Although digital technology has been widely integrated into dental education, there is limited literature investigating the extent of the integration of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) for removable systems in the dental curriculum. The purpose of this study was to assess the current implementation of CAD-CAM complete and partial dentures in predoctoral (PP) and advanced graduate prosthodontic (AGP) education in US dental schools. The study also aimed to identify potential ...

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) has been used to assess the intra-tumor heterogeneity and microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, previous knowledge is not fully universalized. Here, we built a single cell atlas of PDAC from six datasets containing over 70 samples and >130,000 cells, and demonstrated its application to the reanalysis of the previous bulk transcriptomic cohorts and inferring cell-cell communications. The cell decomposition of bulk transcriptomics ...

Poor processing stability has been cited as the fatal shortcoming of the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating starch wastewater (SW). In this study, the SW treatment performance in a one-stage UASB reactor and a pre-acidification equipped UASB process were evaluated together with the microbial dynamics. The results revealed that the pre-acidification provided improvements in terms of the substrate utilization diversity and the stability of the microbial community structure on the ...

The aim of this work was to demonstrate the operation of a large pilot-scale submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (5.0 m3) for biogas production from municipal wastewater at ambient temperature of 25 °C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest one-stage submerged AnMBR that has ever been reported. This AnMBR realized a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h and a treatment capacity of 20 m3 d-1, obtaining excellent effluent quality with COD removal efficiency over 90% and BOD5 removal over ...

We report first-principles calculations that reveal the atomic forms, stability, and energy levels of carbon-related defects in SiC (0001)/SiO$_{\rm 2}$ systems. We clarify the stable position (SiC side, SiO$_{\rm 2}$ side, or just at the SiC/SiO$_{\rm 2}$ interface) of defects depending on the oxidation environment. Under an O-rich condition, the di-carbon antisite ((C$_{\rm 2}$)$_{\rm Si}$) in the SiC side is stable and critical for $n$-channel MOSFETs, whereas the di-carbon defect (Si-C-C-Si) at the ...

Morphology-controlled brookite TiO2 nanorods loaded with AuAg bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile photoreduction process to develop visible-light-responsive photocatalytic performance. The AuAg bimetallic nanoparticles provide good stability and excellent localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. Moreover, the AuAg bimetallic nanoparticles were selectively deposited on the reduction facets of brookite TiO2 nanorods, facilitating the charge separation. As expected, the as- ...

As a novel low-side-effect cancer therapy, photo-immunotherapy (PIT) is based on conjugating monoclonal antibody (mAb) with a near-infrared (NIR) phthalocyanine dye IRDye700DX (IR 700). IR700 is not only fluorescent to be used as an imaging agent, but also phototoxic. When illuminating with NIR light, PIT can induce highly-selective cancer cell death while leaving most of tumor blood vessels unharmed, leading to an effect termed super-enhanced permeability and retention (SUPR), which can significantly ...

Phreatic eruptions are caused by pressurization of geothermal fluid sources at shallow levels. They are relatively small compared to typical magmatic eruptions, but can be very hazardous. However, owing to their small magnitudes, their occurrences are difficult to predict. The ground inflation ...

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring common epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations (exon 19 deletion or exon 21 L858R) respond to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs). The secondary T790 M mutation in exon 20 of the EGFR gene is the most common type of acquired resistance mutation. Several reports have also shown that other secondary mutations (L747S, D761Y and T854A), while uncommon, can induce acquired resistance to first-generation EGFR-TKIs. However, little is known ...

Estrogens play fundamental roles in regulating reproductive activities and they act through estrogen receptor (ESR) in all vertebrates. Most vertebrates have two ESR subtypes (ESR1 and ESR2), whereas teleost fish have at least three (Esr1, Esr2a and Esr2b). Intricate functionalization has been suggested among the Esr subtypes, but to date, distinct roles of Esr have been characterized in only a limited number of species. Study of loss-of-function in animal models is a powerful tool for application ...

Abstract Long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) are the intermediates from anaerobic digestion of lipid-rich waste, and limit the digestion even at millimolar concentrations. The digestion characteristics of unsaturated and saturated LCFAs, represented by oleic and palmitic acids, are investigated. Consequently, palmitic acid was far less inhibitory than oleic acid. Palmitic acid was almost not degraded before 20 d, and the subsequent methane was also produced at a lower rate, below a half for oleic acid. ...
