To clarify potential users’ perceptions toward the development and social implementation of home-care robots in Japan, Ireland, and Finland. Unsigned, self-administered questionnaires were distributed to adults aged 65 or older, family caregivers, and home-care/health and social care professionals (HSCPs). A total of 1004 responses were collected. In Japan, many people were already familiar with robots in their daily lives. The most notable finding about their perspectives on home-care robots was ...

Because of the workforce shortage in Japan, the use of home-care robots, or carebots, is increasingly perceived as a realistic option. Developing and implementing these carebots requires careful consideration of the ethical implications for all types of users. Few studies, however, have addressed the ethical principles and concepts involved in carebot use, and consequently, the discussion regarding roboethics in the home-care environment has been inadequate. This questionnaire study explored the ...

We introduce a method of searching for crystals with high structural stability and its application to the garnet, KTiOPO4 (KTP), huntite-borate, and langasite structures. Results are presented which show that, by using appropriate substitution, an increase of the stability can be achieved. This review gives models and experimental techniques of optimization of compositions for the complex oxide materials with the given structure. Sometimes application of the method mentioned can be used for the determination ...

This paper deals with applicability of non-linear fracture mechanics to crack growth by stress corrosion cracking (SCC) under large-scale yielding and in a plastically deformed area. Crack growth test by compact tension specimen is carried out to evaluate crack growth rate under small-scale and large-scale yielding conditions. To evaluate the crack growth behavior from a crack initiated in a plastically deformed area, crack growth test is also carried out for a very short pre-crack in a plastically ...

Since there have been some railway accidents caused by strong winds in recent years in Japan, it is necessary to establish effective measures to prevent wind-induced accidents and ensure safety of train operation under strong winds. On February 22, 1994, a derailment accident was caused by strong winds on the Nemuro line of Hokkaido Railway Company. Railway Technical Research Institute carried out researches on investigation of the accident and measures at this section. As countermeasures, wind ...

This paper deals with a constitutive model of particulate-reinforced composites which can describe the evolution of debonding damage, matrix plasticity and particle size effects on deformation and damage. An incremental damage model of particulate-reinforced composites based on the Mori–Tanaka's mean field concept has been extended to consider the particle size effects by using the Nan–Clarke's simple method. The particle size effect on deformation is realized by introducing dislocation plasticity ...

Japan is facing a ‘care crisis’. There is an urgent need to ascertain the extent to which potential users are willing to use robotics-aided care before its roll-out as a formal policy. Based on our recent survey, we discuss home-care professionals’ real perceptions and their implications for the future development and implementation of home-care robots. While they showed some concerns about robotics-aided care, they perceived ‘physical support’, ‘communication’ and ‘monitoring’ functions positively. ...

We prepared a cellulose nanofiber reinforced retrograded starch film that had adequate mechanical properties and water durability. Non-retrograded tapioca starch (NRS) and retrograded tapioca starch (RS) were blended with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TCNF) in different weight ratios. Subsequently, the suspensions were cast into films using a solution casting method. It was demonstrated that TCNF/RS films exhibited reduced swelling in water and enhanced mechanical strength compared to TCNF/NRS ...

The photomechanical behavior of cross-linked azobenzene-containing liquid-crystalline polymer films was investigated by means of simultaneous measurement of their optical and mechanical properties. The connection between photoisomerization of the azobenzene moieties, photoinduced change in molecular alignment, photoinduced stress generation, and macroscopic bending was analyzed. Upon UV irradiation, the films exhibited bending due to gradient in cis-azobenzene content, and subsequent unbending when ...

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), a progressive degenerative disorder, is caused by a CAG/glutamine expansion in the androgen receptor (polyQ AR). Recent studies demonstrate that skeletal muscle is an important site of toxicity that contributes to the SBMA phenotype. Here, we sought to identify critical pathways altered in muscle that underlie disease manifestations in AR113Q mice. This led to the unanticipated identification of gene expression changes affecting regulators of carbohydrate ...

Crack-free, transparent and colorless fiber single crystals with the size of 0.8–1.2 mm in diameter and 20–80 mm in length were grown from the melts of NaxCa2.5 − x2Mg2V3O12 where x = 0.0–1.0 by the micro-pulling-down method. The crystals grown from stoichiometric, NaCa2Mg2V3O12, and Na+-rich (x < 1.0) melt in air were transparent and gray colored. It was found that lower the x value, higher is the uniformity of lattice parameters of the solidified fraction. Maximal uniformity was achieved for the Ca2. ...

Ca3LixNb(1.5 + x)Ga(3.5 − 2x)O12 garnets were synthesized and the conditions of the crystal growth are established. The measured lattice constants are about 12.54 Å irrespective of x. It was found that the Ca3Li0.275Nb1.775Ga2.95O12 garnet melts congruently at about 1450°C. Transparent and bubble-free crystals of x = 0.25 and 0.275 were grown by both modified micro-pulling down and Czochralski techniques in air using Pt crucibles. Results of solid state reaction data of other garnets are also discussed. ...

Abstract Shwachman–Diamond syndrome (SDS) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder characterized by exocrine pancreatic dysfunction, bone marrow failure, and leukemia predisposition. Approximately 90% of cases are due to biallelic mutations in the Shwachman–Bodian–Diamond ( SBDS ) gene. Additional phenotypic features variably associated with SDS include skeletal, neurologic, hepatic, cardiac, endocrine, and dental abnormalities. We report five subjects with SDS who developed a range of inflammatory ...

Compelling evidence in Caucasian populations suggests a role for copy-number variations (CNVs) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). We analyzed 1,108 ASD cases, 2,458 SCZ cases, and 2,095 controls in a Japanese population and confirmed an increased burden of rare exonic CNVs in both disorders. Clinically significant (or pathogenic) CNVs, including those at 29 loci common to both disorders, were found in about 8% of ASD and SCZ cases, which was significantly higher than in controls. ...

283 Background: Although surgical resection is the only curative treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), recurrence rates are very high even if complete resection is performed. Accordingly, a new therapeutic strategy against PDAC is needed. Combination with gemcitabine and S-1 (GS) as first line chemotherapy is promising. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of GS for resectable and borderline PDAC in the neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Methods: This ...
