General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) is becoming popular in HPC because of its high peak performance. However, in spite of the potential performance improvements as well as recent promising results in scientific computing applications, its real performance is not necessarily higher than that of the current high-performance CPUs, especially with recent trends towards increasing the number of cores on a single die. This is because the GPU performance can be severely limited ...

Background and Purpose The major obstacles to treatment of pancreatic cancer are the highly invasive capacity and resistance to chemo- and radiotherapy. Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) regulates multiple cellular pathways and is implicated in various diseases including cancer. Here we investigate a pathological role for GSK3β in the invasive and treatment resistant phenotype of pancreatic cancer. Methods Pancreatic cancer cells were examined for GSK3β expression, phosphorylation and activity ...

A 28-year-old woman developed central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) following severe hyponatremia. Radiological examinations demonstrated a characteristic pontine lesion of CPM. Her neurological symptoms (drowsiness, emotional lability, dysarthria, dysphagia, and quadriparesis) were improved dramatically by treatment with thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and rehabilitation. However, results of repeat computed tomographic (CT) scans of the brain remained unchanged. This case therefore suggests that TRH ...

Aim: In chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, it is thought that both chronic persistent inflammation and oxidative stress contribute to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and it has been reported that long‐term oral supplementation with branched‐chain amino acid (BCAA) granules could inhibit liver carcinogenesis. However, the extent of the involvement of these factors remains obscure. Methods: To clarify the involvement of inflammation and oxidative stress in the inhibition of ...

The phase II study of tirabrutinib monotherapy at a daily dose of 480 mg under fasting conditions for treatment-naïve and relapsed/refractory Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (ONO-4059-05 study) demonstrated a promising efficacy and tolerable safety profile. We conducted an unplanned analysis with a median follow-up of 24.8 months to update the efficacy and safety results and to report patient-reported quality of life. Of 27 enrolled patients, 22 patients continued receiving the study drug. The major ...

Tirabrutinib is a second-generation Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor with greater selectivity than ibrutinib. Here, we conducted a multicenter, phase II study of tirabrutinib in patients with treatment-naïve (Cohort A) or with relapsed/refractory (Cohort B) Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM). Patients were treated with tirabrutinib 480 mg once daily. The primary endpoint was major response rate (MRR; ≥ partial response). Secondary endpoints included overall response rate (ORR; ≥ minor response), time ...

Background & Aims: The p53 and BAX genes have been linked to apoptosis. p53 was not frequently found to be mutated in colorectal carcinomas with a microsatellite mutator phenotype, but frame-shift mutations in a tract of eight guanines within BAX were frequently found in these carcinomas. To understand the roles of these genes in hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) tumorigenesis, we examined whether BAX mutations occur in adenoma and carcinoma specimens from patients with HNPCC and also ...

Many human cancers are caused by synthetic or natural chemical compounds in the environment. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma has been reported to be epidemiologically associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption. We examined genetic polymorphisms of the CYP1A1, GSTM1, CYPIIE1, ADH2, and ALDH2 genes in 94 Japanese patients with ...

A vacuum transistor using field emitter arrays was developed to study potential applications as a signal amplifier. We fabricated gated 39 460-tip hafnium nitride field emitter arrays (HfN-FEAs) and evaluated their suitability for use in active devices. The vacuum transistor had a triode structure with a gated HfN-FEA and collector electrode. The device exhibited a collector current of 1.1 mA at an emitter voltage of −58 V, a transconductance of 0.27 mS, and a collector resistance of 2.8 MΩ (yielding ...

Abstract CIC-DUX4 sarcoma (CDS) is a group of rare, mesenchymal, small round cell tumours that harbour the unique CIC-DUX4 translocation, which causes aberrant gene expression. CDS exhibits an aggressive course and poor clinical outcome, thus novel therapeutic approaches are needed for CDS treatment. Although patient-derived cancer models are an essential modality to develop novel therapies, none currently exist for CDS. Thus, the present study successfully established CDS patient-derived xenografts ...

A new strategy for preparing peptide-based adhesive materials is provided. An exactly alternating peptide with glycine-N-butylphenyl glycine dipeptide repeating units exhibits excellent repeatable adhesion capacity. The adhesive properties are attributed to the viscoelastic properties and microfibril formation, which are tunable by simple manipulation of the reaction component on polymerization.
