Newborn screening for sickle cell anemia is necessary in Africa where the disease is more frequent. Hemoglobin electrophoresis is used for screening, but is limited by a high cost and difficult access. Sickling test (Emmel test), which is more affordable and technically more accessible, is often requested for prenatal assessment of pregnant women in West African areas to reserve screening for newborns from mothers in whom the positive sickling test attests the presence of hemoglobin S. This study ...

With the goal of improving poultry genetic resource management, a phenotypic and morphometric characterization of Gallus gallus domesticus species was undertaken in two agroecologic zones (forest and savannah) of Côte d'Ivoire. A sample of 439 hens and 193 cocks were photographed, described and measured individually. Wide scale phenotypical variability was observed in colorings and patterns of the chickens' plumage. The most commonly observed colorings were white (11.0% forest; 11.6% savannah) in ...

Malaria incidence is generally lower in cities than rural areas. However, reported urban malaria incidence may not accurately reflect the level of ongoing transmission, which has potentially large implications for prevention efforts. To guide mosquito net distribution, we assessed the extent of malaria transmission in Conakry, Guinea, in 2018. We found evidence of active malaria transmission.

The metabolomic profile of vaso-occlusive crisis, compared to the basal state of sickle cell disease, has never been reported to our knowledge. Using a standardized targeted metabolomic approach, performed on plasma and erythrocyte fractions, we compared these two states of the disease in the same group of 40 patients. Among the 188 metabolites analyzed, 153 were accurately measured in plasma and 143 in red blood cells. Supervised paired partial least squares discriminant analysis (pPLS-DA) showed ...

One of the major constraints limiting the development of plantain cultivation is the lack of planting material. In Côte d'Ivoire, to overcome this constraint, the FIRCA (Fond Interprofessionnel pour la Recherche et le Conseil Agricole / Interprofessional Fund for Research and Agricultural Advisory) has organized training workshops on PIF technique (Plants Derived from stem fragment). The objective of this study was to take stock of adoption of the PIF technique for seed production of plantain in Côte ...

Gene flow between domesticated plants and their wild relatives is one of the major evolutionary processes acting to shape their structure of genetic diversity. Earlier literature, in the 1970s, reported on the interfertility and the sympatry of wild, weedy and cultivated sorghum belonging to the species Sorghum bicolor in most regions of sub-Saharan Africa. However, only a few recent surveys have addressed the geographical and ecological distribution of sorghum wild relatives and their genetic structure. ...

After seven annual rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) in six Malian villages highly endemic for Wuchereria bancrofti (overall prevalence rate of 42.7%), treatment was discontinued in 2008. Surveillance was performed over the ensuing 5 years to detect recrudescence.Circulating filarial antigen (CFA) was measured using immunochromatographic card tests (ICT) and Og4C3 ELISA in 6-7 year-olds. Antibody to the W. bancrofti infective larval stage (L3) antigen, Wb123, was tested in the same population ...
