Background Dexmedetomidine sedation has advantages, such as low incidence of respiratory depression and prolonged block duration, but also significant disadvantages, such as slow onset, high rate of sedation failure, and a long context-sensitive half-life. Remimazolam provides rapid sedation and recovery, high sedation efficacy and has minimal hemodynamic effects. We hypothesized that patients who received remimazolam would require less rescue midazolam than dexmedetomidine. Methods Patients (n=103) ...

A circuit that can compensate for nonlinearity in frequency modulation of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is proposed. The circuit uses a fixed-length delay line and an analog phase-locked loop (PLL). It sweeps the frequency of VCO output linearly in time and easily adjusts the rate of frequency sweep. For a VCO operating in a frequency range of 5.3-5.4 GHz, the nonlinearity in frequency modulation was measured by observing the beat frequency f/sub B/(t) between the VCO and delayed VCO outputs. ...

We describe a method of arthroscopically assisted, mini-open, anatomical reconstruction of the coracoclavicular ligament. This method restores both components of the native ligament with the aim of achieving maximum stability with minimal disruption of the normal anatomy. Using the same principles of ligament reconstruction that are employed in other joints, transosseous tunnels are created following the native footprints of the conoid and trapezoid ligaments and an autologous graft is fixed using ...

A systematic structure-activity relationship of 3beta-hydroxy-27- P- E-coumaroyloxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid ( 7), a triterpene ester isolated from UNCARIA RHYNCHOPHYLLA as a phospholipase Cgamma1 inhibitor, was undertaken with a view toward elucidating its chemical mode of action on PLCgamma1. Related derivatives and analogues of 7 were synthesized and their inhibitory activities against PLCgamma1 were evaluated IN VITRO. The results indicate that 3-OH and 27-esterification may be essential, and that ...

Tunable threshold resistive switching characteristics of Pt-Fe(2)O(3) core-shell nanoparticle (NP) assembly were investigated. The colloidal Pt-Fe(2)O(3) core-shell NPs with a Pt core diameter of ∼3 nm and a total diameter of ∼15 nm were chemically synthesized by a one-step process. These NPs were assembled as a layer with a thickness of ∼80 nm by repeated dip-coating between Ti and Pt electrodes on a flexible polyethersulfone (PES) substrate. The Ti/NPs/Pt/PES structure exhibited the threshold switching, ...

Improvement of liver function is one of the most popular commercial health claims of functional foods in Asian countries, including Korea. After examining the potential of several traditional Korean wild vegetables for enhancing liver function, we found that Youngia denticulata Kitam. has strong hepatoprotective effects against oxidative stress induced by tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP). We are the first to report that the extract and ethyl acetate fractions of Y. denticulata have radical scavenging ...

ABSTRACT: This paper presents the results of an investigation into the internal stability of two-tier, geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) walls. Model tests were first conducted using two-tier GRS model walls that were reduced from a full-scale GRS wall according to the similitude law. A series of finite element (FE) analyses were also carried out on full-scale GRS walls with various offset distances and reinforcement distributions. It is shown that the critical offset distance beyond which two tiers ...

Background Mating-type loci of mushroom fungi contain master regulatory genes that control recognition between compatible nuclei, maintenance of compatible nuclei as heterokaryons, and fruiting body development. Regions near mating-type loci in fungi often show adapted recombination, facilitating the generation of novel mating types and reducing the production of self-compatible mating types. Compared to other fungi, mushroom fungi have complex mating-type systems, showing both loci with redundant ...

Ovarian function suppression (OFS) has been shown to be effective as adjuvant endocrine therapy in premenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, it is currently unclear if addition of OFS to standard tamoxifen therapy after completion of adjuvant chemotherapy results in a survival benefit. Martensite transformation kinetics is the principal factor underlying the constitutive model of shape memory alloys (SMAs). Therefore, the transformation kinetics formulation is essential for predicting the thermo-mechanical behavior of SMAs. In this work, we show that previous models, including the Brinson model, which is the most widely used one-dimensional phenomenological model, cannot describe the compressive thermo-mechanical behavior of SMAs due to the tension–compression asymmetry. In addition, ...

Abstract Hour-level persistent luminescence is realized with carbon dots embedded in cyanuric acid, the composition of which is easily obtained by the microwave-assisted heating of carbon dots and urea. By forming donor-acceptor blends, the proposed composition yields intermediate states with long lifetimes, providing a rare-earth-metal-free route to ultralong persistent luminescence.

High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice were orally administered either distilled water, low-dose CZH (125 mg/kg), or high-dose CZH (250 ...

Redox factor-1 (Ref-1) is a ubiquitously expressed protein with proven roles as a modulator of redox-sensitive transcription, and as an endonuclease in the base excision repair pathway of oxidatively damaged DNA. Although Ref-1 is induced by a variety of oxidative stress and protects cells against oxidative stress, the function of Ref-1 in regulating nitric oxide (NO) synthesis has not been elucidated to date. We investigated the role of Ref-1 in regulating NO synthesis and NO-mediated apoptosis employing ...

Abstract The engineering of structural colors is currently a promising, rapidly emerging research field because structural colors of outstanding spatial resolution and durability can be generated using a sustainable production method. However, the restricted and saturated color range in micro/nano-fabricated structural ‘pigments’ has hindered the dissemination of structural color printing. Here, this article presents a spectral mixing color filter (SMCF), which is the concept of fine-tunable color ...

Several studies found that FE65, a cytoplasmic adaptor protein, interacts with APP and LRP1, altering the trafficking and processing of APP. We have previously shown that FE65 interacts with the ApoE receptor, ApoER2, altering its trafficking and processing. Interestingly, it has been shown that FE65 can act as a linker between APP and LRP1 or ApoER2. In the present study, we tested whether FE65 can interact with another ApoE receptor, VLDLR, thereby altering its trafficking and processing, and ...

The viscosity of the SF formic acid solution was reduced slightly but constantly just after the dissolution of SF in formic acid. Nevertheless, the wet- and electro-spinnability of SFL and SFC3 did not deteriorate until 3 days storage time of dope. In addition, the mechanical properties of the SFL and SFC3 wet spun filaments did not decrease ...

Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) has been proposed as a non-invasive method for estimating the severity of fibrosis and the complications of cirrhosis. Measurement of the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) is the gold standard for assessing the presence of portal hypertension, but its invasiveness limits its clinical application. In this study we evaluated the relationship between LSM and HVPG, and the predictive value of LSM for clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) and severe portal ...
