Thrombocytopenia, Anasarca, Fever, Reticulin fibrosis/Renal failure, and Organomegaly (TAFRO) syndrome is a recently described systemic inflammatory disorder characterized by thrombocytopenia, anasarca, fever, reticulin fibrosis/renal failure, and organomegaly. It has an acute or subacute onset of unknown etiology, although some pathological features resemble those of multicentric Castleman disease. We here report two cases of TAFRO syndrome. The symptoms and pathological findings in these cases ...

We have studied changes in the antibacterial activity and the mode of action of farnesol against Staphylococcus aureus when two terpene alcohols with an aliphatic carbon chain were added, individually, to a bacterial suspension that contained farnesol. Geraniol increased the growth-inhibitory activity of farnesol, but suppressed its ability to damage cell membranes, which is one of the predominant features of the growth-inhibitory activity of farnesol. Geranylgeraniol decreased the growth-inhibitory ...

We addressed the incidence of influenza-associated acute encephalopathy, which is distinct from Reye syndrome, in children in Japan. Eighty-nine children with a mean age of 3.8 years were reported to have developed this disease during eight influenza seasons (December 1994–April 2002) in Hokkaido, Japan. None of them had received aspirin. Most of the patients rapidly became comatose with or without convulsions with a mean interval of 1.7 days from the onset of fever to the onset of central nervous ...

It is well known that acute onset brain dysfunction, which usually is diagnosed as encephalitis or encephalopathy, occurs in association with influenza. However, this may have been underestimated as a rather infrequent event. Sixty-four infants and children developed encephalitis-encephalopathy during the five recent influenza seasons in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan.Inquiries were sent at the end of each season, from October 1994 to March 1999, to 94 hospitals and institutes in Hokkaido ...

Abstract Background Only a few studies have reported the resection and reconstruction of major hepatic veins during hepatectomy. Here, we present our strategy and techniques for venous reconstruction with cryopreserved homologous veins, and describe the surgical outcome. Methods Among 2,387 hepatectomy patients, 39 patients who required hepatic venous reconstruction were reviewed retrospectively. Venous reconstruction was performed to secure a non‐congested liver remnant volume of at least 40% of ...

Four novel multifunctional polyoxometalate (POM)-based inorganic–organic hybrid compounds, [α2-P2W17O61{(RGe)}]7– (Ge-1, R1 = HOOC(CH2)2– and Ge-2, R2 = H2C═CHCH2–) and [α2-P2W17O61{(RSi)2O}]6– (Si-1, R1 and Si-2, R2), were prepared by incorporating organic chains having terminal functional groups (carboxylic acid and allyl groups) into monolacunary site of Dawson polyoxoanion [α2-P2W17O61]10–. In these POMs, new modification of the terminal functional groups was attained by introducing organogermyl and organosilyl ...

A polyphase titanate ceramic incorporating sodium‐free simulated high‐level nuclear waste was doped with 0.91 wt% of 244 Cm to accelerate the effects of long‐term self‐irradiation arising from α decays. The ceramic included three main constituent minerals: hollandite, perovskite, and zirconolite, with some minor phases. Although hollandite showed the broadening of its X‐ray diffraction lines and small lattice parameter changes during damage ingrowth, the unit cell was substantially unaltered. Perovskite ...

Curium‐doped titanate ceramic containing sodium‐rich high‐level nuclear waste showed a gradual decrease in density up to a dose of 8.5 × 10 17 α decays ·g −1 . After that, the rate of density change increased apparently because of crack formation. Optical microscopy showed cracks >0.1 mm long and > 1 μm wide after a dose of 7.9 × 10 17 α decays ·g −1 . Leach tests suggested that the dissolution‐control phases for sodium and cesium changed from freudenbergite and hollandite, respectively, to intergranular phases ...

The polyphase titanate ceramic containing sodium‐rich simulated high‐level nuclear waste was doped with 0.69 wt% of 244 Cm to accelerate long‐term self‐irradiation due to α decays. α autoradiography showed that α emissions were almost uniformaly distributed throughout the curium‐doped samples on a >20‐μm scale although micropore surfaces and titanium oxide agglomerates were free of α‐emitting nuclides. The phase assemblage of the curium‐doped titanate ceramic included freudenbergite and loveringite ...

We present a case of clear cell adenocarcinoma of the female urethra that has been evaluated with CT and MRI. The lesion was a well-demarcated mass surrounded with peripheral enhancement on CT. On MRI a sharply marginated mass was located in the midurethra, giving rise to a smooth elevation of the bladder base. On T2-weighted imaging, the lesion was hyperintense, being surrounded by a ring of lower signal intensity at the periphery. A central urethral dot of lower signal intensity traversed the ...

Mammalian gametogenesis is regulated through complex interactions between germ and somatic cells. To investigate the mechanism underlying the differentiation of functional gametes, some genes specifically expressed during gametogenesis have been isolated and characterized. In a search for further examples of such genes, we have isolated from a newborn mouse testis cDNA library, a clone corresponding to mouse inhibin α-subunit. Although it is known that the inhibin α-subunit molecule is abundantly ...

Volatility of 137 Cs and 106 Ru from borosilicate glass containing actual high‐level waste was measured in an almost closed stainless‐steel canister. The temperature dependence of the volatility of 137 Cs was close to that obtained in our previous study using 134 Cs. The volatility of 106 Ru was about one‐fifth that of 137 Cs at 600° and 800°C. The air contamination by 137 Cs and 106 Ru in the canister at 400°C was estimated at 1.8 × 10 2 and 2 × 10 Bq/cm 3 , respectively, when it was assumed that the ...

Aim Indocyanine green (ICG)‐fluorescence imaging is useful for detecting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) during surgery, but its accuracy has not been compared to that of multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) with liver explant correlation. The aim of the present study was to clarify the precise diagnostic accuracy of ICG‐fluorescence imaging for detecting HCC in a whole explant liver survey. Methods Thirty‐three patients with end‐stage liver disease (mean age, 53 years) were prospectively enrolled ...

Abstract The antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus of terpene alcohols with aliphatic carbon chains of various lengths were investigated. Farnesol and nerolidol, which each contain two isoprene units, had the strongest antibacterial activities and damaging effects on cell membranes of all the terpene alcohols tested. Plaunotol, which is a diterpene, had antibacterial activity similar to that of sesquiterpenes. The relationship between the length of the carbon chain bonded to the ...

Farnesol, a sesquiterpene alcohol with an aliphatic carbon chain, inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and induced the leakage of potassium ions. We investigated the action of farnesol on the cytoplasmic membrane of S. aureus. No ion channels that would account for the loss of potassium ions were detected. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements suggested that farnesol proceeds into the cytoplasmic membrane of S. aureus cells, where it induces the disordering and eventual disruption ...
