Abstract The cobalt(III) complexes containing ammoniatriacetato group (ata) as a quadridentate ligand are newly prepared: i) α-K[Co ata(OH)(OH2)]·2H2O ii) β-K[Co ata(OH)(OH2)]·3H2O iii) K2[ataCo(OH)2Co ata]·6H2O iv) K2[Co ata(CO3)]·H2O v) K2[Co ata(C2O4)]·H2O In order to determine the structural formulae of these complexes, their visible, ultraviolet and infrared spectra were measured, as well as their thermal decomposition and their potency to coagulate ferric oxide sol.

Non-fatal suicide attempt is the most important risk factor for later suicide. Emergency department visits for attempted suicide are increasingly recognised as opportunities for intervention. However, no strong evidence exists that any intervention is effective at preventing repeated suicide attempts. We aimed to investigate whether assertive case management can reduce repetition of suicide attempts in people with mental health problems who had attempted suicide and were admitted to emergency departments. ...

The gut-liver axis has attracted much interest in the context of chronic liver disease pathogenesis. Prebiotics such as dietary fibers were shown to attenuate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by modulating gut microbiota. Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG), a water-soluble dietary fiber, has been reported to alleviate the symptoms of various intestinal diseases and metabolic syndromes. However, its effects on NAFLD remain to be fully elucidated. To determine whether treatment with PHGG attenuates ...

Human B-lymphoblastoid cell lines transformed by Epstein-Barr (EBV-LCLs) are considered to be immortalized, although most of them show a normal diploid karyotype. Recently, we and others have shown that only part of EBV-LCLs is immortalized by developing strong telomerase activity that stabilizes the telomeres. In this study, we investigated the change in karyotypes during immortalization. All the eight immortalized cell lines developed clonal chromosomal aberrations accompanied by the development ...

FK506 is a new drug which has potent immunosuppressive activity. We studied its immunosuppressive effects on active Heymann's nephritis and the autologous phase of Masugi nephritis. The induction of active Heymann's nephritis was completely suppressed by FK506 injected simultaneously with the antigen (day 1) and then daily for 14 days at a dose of 0.64 mg/kg per day or more. With a lower dosage of this agent, antibody production and immune deposits in the glomerular basement membrane occurred despite ...

Abstract In reactions of ArN(MgBr)2 with o-MeO- and o-halo-substituted nitrobenzenes, types and yields of products were different from those in its reactions with m- and p-substituted substrates. Condensation (leading to unsymmetrical azoxy- and azobenzenes), o-substituent replacement, and nuclear substitution took place. Relative yields of products were greatly affected by substituents and reaction conditions. o-MeO and o-F favor replacement, while o-Cl, o-Br, and o-I favor substitution. Replacement ...

Abstract The brain stores and recalls memories through a set of neurons, termed engram cells. However, it is unclear how these cells are organized to constitute a corresponding memory trace. We established a unique imaging system that combines Ca 2+ imaging and engram identification to extract the characteristics of engram activity by visualizing and discriminating between engram and non-engram cells. Here, we show that engram cells detected in the hippocampus display higher repetitive activity ...

When consolidated memories are retrieved, they become labile and a new protein synthesis-dependent reconsolidation process is required to restabilize these memories. So far, most studies conducted on reconsolidation rely on the analyses of animal behavior, leaving the synaptic mechanisms that underlie reconsolidation largely unclear. Here, we examined whether the reconsolidation process occurs in hippocampal long term potentiation (LTP), as a synaptic model that is correlated with long term memories ( ...

Late-phase long-term potentiation (L-LTP) in hippocampus, thought to be the cellular basis of long-term memory, requires new protein synthesis. Neural activity enhances local protein synthesis in dendrites, which in turn mediates long-lasting synaptic plasticity. Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIα (CaMKIIα) is a locally synthesized protein crucial for this plasticity, as L-LTP is impaired when its local synthesis is eliminated. However, the distribution of Camk2a mRNA during L-LTP induction ...

Gut microbiota have profound effects on bile acid metabolism by promoting deconjugation, dehydrogenation, and dehydroxylation of primary bile acids in the distal small intestine and colon. We investigated whether pain thresholds (PTs) differ between individuals with and without DM (non-DM; NDM). To this end, we assessed whether PTs obtained from the oral cavity, hands, and feet differed from each other and across groups, and whether PTs differed for the three current frequencies used for testing (2000 Hz, 250 Hz, and 5 Hz).
