The adhesion of osteoblast-like cells to silicate and borate glasses was measured in cell growth medium using colloidal probe microscopy. The probes consisted of silicate and borate glass spheres, 25-50 μm in diameter, attached to atomic force microscope cantilevers. Variables of the study included glass composition and time of contact of the cell to the glasses. Increasing the time of contact from 15 to 900 s increased the force of adhesion. The data could be plotted linearly on a log-log plot ...

ALTHOUGH mycoplasma (pleuropneumonia-like organisms) have been described principally as animal pathogens recent evidence has indicated that these organisms can be the cause of human illness. We studied the effect of an IgG anti-IgM on the dissociation of cell bound IgM anti-hapten antibody, as measured with fluid phase hapten. Methotrexate (MTX) covalently bound to the red cells surface was used as hapten; rabbit anti-MTX IgM and rabbit anti-allotype IgG reactive with the IgM were used as antibodies. The amount of cell bound antibodies was measured with 125I-labelled protein A. In the absence of the anti-allotype antibody, most of the anti-hapten IgM was prevented from reassociation ...

RUTH A. YOUNG, Sheldon S. Stoffer, Lewis E. Braverman,
This study describes a family with intrinsic thyroid disease in addition to familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia, a syndrome associated with euthyroidism and increased binding of thyroxine to serum albumin. The simultaneous occurrence of thyroid disease and elevated serum thyroxine concentrations due to familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia may confound the diagnosis of the two concurrent disorders and the subsequent therapy of the thyroid disease.
