Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe psychiatric disorder associated with many different risk factors, both genetic and environmental. A recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) of Han Chinese identified three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs rs11038167, rs11038172, and rs835784) in the tetraspanins gene TSPAN18 as possible susceptibility loci for schizophrenia. Hoping to validate these findings, we conducted a case-control study of Han Chinese with 1093 schizophrenia cases and 1022 healthy controls. ...

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common disease that is more prevalent in older people. Surgical intervention is a safe treatment of choice. However, the recurrence rate is relatively high and the outcome is not always satisfactory among surgically treated patients. It is believed that aberrant angiogenesis and intracapsular inflammation contribute to the development of CSDH. Atorvastatin is reported to promote angiogenesis and suppress inflammation. We have recently shown that atorvastatin ...

Abstract New polymer blends of polypropylene random copolymer (PP‐R) and poly(ethylene‐octene) (POE) were prepared by melt‐blending process using a corotating twin‐screw extruder. The POE content was varied up to 35%. The toughening efficiency of POE for PP‐R was evaluated by the mechanical properties of the resulted PP‐R/POE blends. The crystallization behavior and morphology of the blends were also studied. Results show that POE acts as nucleation agent to induce the crystallization of PP‐R matrix ...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small noncoding RNAs (18-25 nt) that are involved in many physiological processes including development, cancer, immunity, apoptosis and host-microbe interactions through post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. In this study, we measured the profile of small RNAs over the developmental transitions of the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis from egg hatching, molting, and pupation to adult eclosion. We identified 250 miRNAs, including 83 known and 167 ...

The transversal propagation of the edge states in a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall system are classified by decay characteristic quantity $\lambda$. Two different modes of the helical edge states exhibit distinct behaviors. The penetration depth is momentum dependent in normal edge states. The finite size gap decays monotonously with sample width, leading to the normal size effect. In contrast, the penetration depth maintains a uniform minimal value in the special edge states with much shorter ...

Formation of conversion coatings involves chemical reactions at the solid/liquid interface. A liquid membrane on Mg and its alloys was adopted to fabricate conversion films based on the hot corrosion reactions at the choline chloride-urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) membrane/substrate interface. Colour and corrosion resistance of the conversion films on pure Mg and AZ31B Mg alloys are found to be highly depended on the hot corrosion time. The conversion film possesses a porous surface. The size of ...

The cardiac troponin I (cTnI) isoform contains a unique N-terminal extension that functions to modulate activation of cardiac myofilaments. During cardiac remodeling restricted proteolysis of cTnI removes this cardiac specific N-terminal modulatory extension to alter myofilament regulation. We have demonstrated expression of the N-terminal-deleted cTnI (cTnI-ND) in the heart decreased the development of the cardiomyopathy like phenotype in a beta-adrenergic-deficient transgenic mouse model. Summary Deletion of the spermidine synthase gene in the fungus Aspergillus nidulans results in a strain, ΔspdA , which requires spermidine for growth and accumulates putrescine as the sole polyamine. Vegetative growth but not sporulation or sterigmatocystin production is observed when ΔspdA is grown on media supplemented with 0.05–0.10 mM exogenous spermidine. Supplementation of ΔspdA with ≥ 0.10 mM spermidine restores sterigmatocystin production and ≥ 0.50 mM spermidine produces a phenotype with denser ...

Polyolefins, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS), are widely used plastics in our daily life. The excessive use of plastics and improper handling methods cause considerable pollution in the environment, as well as waste of energy. The biodegradation of polyolefins seems to be an environmentally friendly and low-energy consumption method for plastics degradation. Many strains that could degrade polyolefins have been isolated from the environment. Some enzymes have also ...

A novel water-soluble paclitaxel complex has been prepared by inclusion complexation with bridged bis(β-cyclodextrin)s and characterized by means of 1H NMR, SEM, powder X-ray diffraction patterns, TG-DTA, DSC, FT-IR, and 2D NOESY. The cyclodextrins were able to solubilize paclitaxel to levels as high as 2 mg/mL. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of the novel complexes was assessed using a K562 leukemia cell line which indicated that drug concentrations of 10 pg/mL elicited an inhibitory effect.

The coronary artery stent has been widely used in clinic. In-stent restenosis was mainly caused by the excessive proliferation of smooth muscle cell and the inflammation due to the metal ion released from stent scaffold of the drug-eluting stent. Thus, to reduce the in-stent restenosis and promote the vascular endothelialization have become a hot research point in this area. In this paper, a nano-TiO 2 ceramic coating was deposited on 316L stainless steel to reduce the metal ion release and to inhibit ...

Hexafluoromisonidazole (CCI-103F) is a hypoxic cell label that can be measured by in vivo [1H]/[19F] magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). The retention of CCI-103F in SCCVII tumors was found to be correlated with tumor size, with larger tumors retaining more label. Such a correlation was anticipated, as larger SCCVII tumors have larger hypoxic fractions. A significant but less strong correlation was also found between CCI-103F retention and the fraction of tumor cells surviving after 10 Gy irradiation, ...

Although numerous intron gains have been discovered, the mechanisms of intron creation have proven to be elusive. Previous study revealed that the vulcan gene of Drosophila melanogaster contained four exons in its coding region. In the current study, a newly created intron (Intron L) was identified on exon 2 of vulcan in D. melanogaster by comparing expression sequence tags. The RT–PCR experiment revealed that Intron L was associated with intron retention, in which two alternative transcripts of ...

Abstract New crystal structures of fully hydrogenated borophene (borophane) have been predicted by first principles calculation. Comparing with the chair-like borophane (C-boropane) that has been reported in literature, we obtained four new borophane conformers with much lower total-energy. The most stable one, washboard-like borophane (W-borophane), has energy about 113.41 meV/atom lower than C-borophane. In order to explain the relative stability of different borophane conformers, the atom configuration, ...
