Synthesis procedures of monodisperse Prussian blue nanoparticles have been investigated to control their size in a citric acid reduction system. Two different procedures, enforced-nucleation and additional-growth ones, are applied to decrease and to increase the particle size, respectively. In the former, small amount of ascorbic acid is added in the citric acid solution as the enforced-nucleation agent, which varies the number of nuclei and thus the particle size depending on its amount. In the ...

Abstract Background Despite wide acknowledgement of the importance of sarcopenia and prognostic markers such as the neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio, the impact on cancer patient survival of the timing of sarcopenia's emergence and its severity is not well understood, nor is the association between sarcopenia and prognostic markers. The aim of this study, therefore, was to investigate the effect of the severity and timing of changes in the psoas muscle index (PMI) on survival of advanced esophageal ...

Summary Two cases of internal carotid artery thrombosis in apparently healthy girls were reported. The first case died of massive encephalomalacia and was demonstrated to have widespread occlusion of the circle of Willis and the distal segments of the bilateral internal carotid artery. Since histological changes characterized by numerous thick intimal plaques were similar to those which occur during infectious diseases, it was suspected that chronic tuberculosis or otitis media which were revealed ...

Abstract Background Preoperative clinical diagnosis of lymph node (LN) metastasis and subsequent pathological diagnosis are often not in agreement. Detection of false-negative LNs is essential in selecting an optimal treatment strategy, and most importantly, the presence of false-negative LN is itself a significant prognostic indicator. Therefore, at present, there is an urgent need to establish more accurate and individualized evaluation methods for LN metastasis. Methods Of 213 cN0 patients who ...

Phytophthora infestans, the agent of late blight disease of potato, is a hemibiotrophic pathogen with biotrophic action during early infection and necrotrophic in the later stage of colonization. Mature Nicotiana benthamiana was resistant to P. infestans, whereas relatively young plants were susceptible to this pathogen. Young plants became resistant following a pretreatment with acibenzolar-S-methyl, a functional analog of salicylic acid (SA), indicating that susceptibility of young plants is due ...

The oomycete pathogen, Phytophthora infestans, is the causal agent of potato late blight, which is one of the most destructive and economically important plant diseases. We investigated the interaction between P. infestans and Solanaceous model plant Nicotiana benthamiana. Mature N. benthamiana plants were resistant to 8 isolates of P. infestans, whereas relatively young plants were susceptible to all isolates. Analysis with virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) indicated that NbSGT1 and NbHSP90, genes ...

SUMMARY Fibroblast L929 and myoblast C2C12 cells of mouse connective tissue origin were sown on the surface of conductive polymer films [polypyrrole ( PPy ) and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) ( PEDOT )] in a cell culture medium, and the proliferative process of these cells was observed. Without changing form, fibroblast L929 and myoblast C2C12 cells were observed to proliferate similarly to cells cultured in commercially available dishes and to maintain compatibility. It is inferred that the two conductive ...

Atomic oxygen and ozone are essential reactive species in plasma oxidation processes. Pure oxygen discharge is preferable to produce atomic oxygen and ozone while a difficulty in measuring their local densities exists. The ozone density is typically measured by UV absorption, but its resolution is insufficient for measuring the local ozone density in filamentary discharges. The atomic oxygen density can be measured by two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) method. However, ozone ...

We constructed an imaging polarimeter, PICO, that was optimized for comets and/or cometary objects. PICO has a field-of-view of 5$' \times$ 10$'$ and employs a fixed Wollaston prism as an analyzer. In the case of polarimeters using a double-beam prism, such as a Wollaston prism, lateral chromatic aberrations originating from the prism often degrade the image quality and measurement accuracy. However, PICO suffers little lateral chromatic aberration due to compensation provided by newly designed lens ...

Nitric oxide (NO) is important in some physiological responses of plants and plays a crucial role in the regulation of both defense responses and inducing resistance to fungal pathogens. Abstract Phenylene–disiloxane polymers were prepared from 1,4‐bis(dimethylsilyl)benzene and 1,3‐bis(dimethylsilyl)benzene with water in various ratios by catalytic cross‐dehydrocoupling polymerization. Each isomer showed almost equal reactivity in the polymerization as verified by the analysis of the composition by 1 H NMR. Crystallinity observed in the polymer obtained from the 1,4‐isomer was removed by incorporating a small amount of 1,3‐isomer. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry

The relationship between Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is not completely understood.RT-qPCR was used to evaluate the mRNA expression of TLR1-10 in 13 ESCC lines. We then used ESCC tissue microarray (TMA) to confirm expression of TLR3 protein in patients with ESCC.All ESCC lines showed 10-60 times higher TLR3 mRNA expression than PBLs. High expression of TLR3 correlated with favorable 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease specific survival (DSS) among patients ...

Abstract Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most fatal types of malignant tumors worldwide. Epitranscriptome, such as N 6 ‐methyladenosine (m 6 A) of mRNA, is an abundant post‐transcriptional mRNA modification and has been recently implicated to play roles in several cancers, whereas the significance of m 6 A modifications is virtually unknown in ESCC. Analysis of tissue microarray of the tumors in 177 ESCC patients showed that higher expression of m 6 A demethylase ALKBH5 correlated ...
