Seven new cembrane-type diterpenes, lobophytolins C–I (3–9), and one new prenylated-guiane-type diterpene, lobophytolin J (10), along with six known related ones (1, 2, 11–14), have been isolated from the soft coral Lobophytum sp. collected off the Xisha Island in the South China Sea. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and quantum mechanical (QM)-NMR methods. The absolute configuration of lobophytolin H (8) was determined by the application of the modified Mosher's method ...

Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) are increasingly used for ocean missions, which typically require long duration of operations under strict energy constraints. Consequently, there is an increased interest in energy efficient path planning for USVs. This work proposes a novel energy efficient path planning algorithm to address the challenges with the presence of spatially-temporally variant sea current and complex geographic map data, by integrating the following algorithms, namely Voronoi roadmap, ...

The aim of this study was to identify predictors of 30-day and midterm mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) by means of a systemic review. TAVI was demonstrated to be safe and efficacious in patients with severe aortic stenosis. An accurate estimation of procedural risk of these patients represents an actual challenge. The PubMed and Cochrane Collaboration databases were systematically searched for studies reporting on the incidence and independent predictors of 30-day and ...

In this paper, a novel Voronoi-Visibility (VV) path planning algorithm, which integrates the merits of a Voronoi diagram and a Visibility graph, is proposed for solving the Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) path planning problem. The VM (Voronoi shortest path refined by Minimising the number of waypoints) algorithm was applied for performance comparison. The VV and VM algorithms were compared in ten Singapore Strait missions and five Croatian missions. To test the computational time, a high-resolution, ...

Zika virus has been responsible for recent outbreaks in the western hemisphere with known neurological complications such as microcephaly. This complication has not been previously documented in continental Africa. Neurological evaluation of the newborn was performed after birth, at one and two months of age. The mother and the newborn sera samples were tested by immunofluorescent assay (IFA; immunoglobulin G [IgG] and IgM) for Zika virus and the presence of Zika virus ribonucleic acid (RNA) was checked ...

Abstract We have studied the properties of organic and organometallic polymers based on a similar chemical structure to elucidate the influence of the metal center on the optical and electronic properties of the polymers as well as their photovoltaic performance. Detailed characterization of the optical properties of both polymers is performed and film morphology and photovoltaic performance are compared. Metal‐containing polymers exhibit red‐shifted absorption and under optimal processing conditions ...

The role of the novel costimulatory molecule TIM4 in anti-islet response is unknown. We explored TIM4 expression and targeting in Th1 (BALB/c islets into C57BL/6 mice) and Th2 (BALB/c islets into Tbet(-/-) C57BL/6 mice) models of anti-islet alloimmune response and in a model of anti-islet autoimmune response (diabetes onset in NOD mice). The targeting of TIM4, using the monoclonal antibody RMT4-53, promotes islet graft survival in a Th1 model, with 30% of the graft surviving in the long term; islet ...

Crossing the conditionally expressed ATF2 mutant with K14-Cre mice (K14.ATF2 f/f ) resulted in selective expression of mutant ATF2 within the basal layer of the epidermis. Abstract Purpose: MLN9708 (ixazomib citrate), which hydrolyzes to pharmacologically active MLN2238 (ixazomib), is a next-generation proteasome inhibitor with demonstrated preclinical and clinical antimyeloma activity, but yet with an unknown effect on myeloma bone disease. Here, we investigated its bone anabolic and antiresorptive effects in the myeloma setting and in comparison with bortezomib in preclinical models. Vibrations often affect real-world mechanical systems and engineering structures. Therefore, effective control methods for vibration suppression are crucial to guaranty systems' stability and proper operation. This paper proposes a novel variable fractional-order (FO) sliding mode control to suppress vibrations on structures in the presence of uncertainties and disturbances. A novel variable fractional sliding mode surface is designed, and a hyperbolic tangent function is introduced in the control ...

Antonio R. Magalhães,

This paper is based on a presentation with the same name that I did in the ColoquioInternacional Cosmopoliticas II – Primaveras cosmopoliticas, in 2020. In it, I propose an alternativesense for the concept of the decolonial. This sense of the decolonial is produced by establishing a parallel between the turn, in contemporary theory, from poststructuralism/deconstruction to speculative theories (speculative realism, ontological turn, new materialisms etc.), and a possible analogous turn, in the study ...

Despite the wide use of Cimicifuga racemosa (CR) extract to treat symptoms associated with menopause and other gynecological disorders, very little is known about its mechanism of action. Therefore, we studied in this report the antiestrogenic and antiproliferative effect of a new CR ethanolic extract, Ze 450, in a MCF-7 cell clone that does not proliferate in response to 17beta-estradiol (E(2)). Using this cell line, we have found that the extract inhibited cell proliferation and showed antiestrogenic ...

Past global climate changes had strong regional expression. To elucidate their spatio-temporal pattern, we reconstructed past temperatures for seven continental-scale regions during the past one to two millennia. The most coherent feature in nearly all of the regional temperature reconstructions is a long-term cooling trend, which ended late in the nineteenth century. At multi-decadal to centennial scales, temperature variability shows distinctly different regional patterns, with more similarity ...

Though tree-ring chronologies are annually resolved, their dating has never been independently validated at the global scale. Moreover, it is unknown if atmospheric radiocarbon enrichment events of cosmogenic origin leave spatiotemporally consistent fingerprints. Here we measure the 14C content in 484 individual tree rings formed in the periods 770-780 and 990-1000 CE.
