The variations of susceptibility to alloxan induced Diabetes in a total of seventeen rabbits was described. Our study was designed to explore dosage schedules which might improve rabbit responsiveness to and survival after alloxan treatment. A wide range of response to intravenously administered alloxan was observed. Permanent diabetes (blood glucose 350 mg/dl) was found in three rabbits after a single injection (60 mg/kg in one, 100 mg/kg in two). This effect has persisted for eight months. By contrast, ...

Introduction: the goal of asthma treatment is to obtain and maintain a good control of symptoms. Investigating factors associated with inadequately control asthma could help in strategies to improve asthma control. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with inadequately controlled asthma in asthma patients under chest specialist care.

The aim of this study was to determine the in vitro antioxidant activity, free radical scavenging property and the beneficial effects of extracts of various parts of Syzygium guineense in reducing oxidative stress damage in the liver. The effects of extracts on free radicals were determined on radicals DPPH, ABTS, NO and OH followed by the antioxidant properties using Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power assay (FRAP) and hosphomolybdenum (PPMB). The phytochemical screening of these extracts was performed ...

Quantum networking relies on entanglement distribution between distant nodes, typically realized by swapping procedures. However, entanglement swapping is a demanding task in practice, mainly because of limited effectiveness of entangled photon sources and Bell-state measurements necessary to realize the process. Here we experimentally activate a remote distribution of two-photon polarization entanglement superseding the need for initial entangled pairs and traditional Bell-state measurements. This ...

Abstract Background: The herbal Petasites hybridus (butterbur) extract (Ze 339, PET) is known to have leukotriene inhibiting properties, and therefore might inhibit allergic diseases. Methods: The effect of PET was investigated in ovalbumin (OVA) immunized BALB/c mice given intranasally together with antigen challenge in the murine model of allergic airway disease (asthma) with the analysis of the inflammatory and immune parameters in the lung. Results: PET given with the antigen challenge inhibited ...

The synthesis of the complete family of phosphatidylinositol phosphate analogues (PIPs) from five key core intermediates A-E is described. These core compounds were obtained from myo-inositol orthoformate 1 via regioselective DIBAL-H and trimethylaluminium-mediated cleavages and a resolution-protection process using camphor acetals 10. Coupling of cores A-E with phosphoramidites 34 and 38, derived from the requisite protected lipid side chains, afforded the fully-protected PIPs. Removal of the remaining ...

The purpose of this reflection was to investigate whether a “language of education” is possible in the Distance learning modalities, more specifically if, in Distance learning, it is possible to create conditions for the responsible response to the call of the Other, for ethical dialog, and if possibilities for the subject to be constituted as a being beyond what was modeled to be, for transcendence are offered. Based on a bibliographic research, especially on Levinas and Gur-Ze’ev’s works, it was ...

In 46,XY disorders of sex development, 5α-reductase deficiency is rare and is not usually the first-intention diagnosis in newborn ambiguous genitalia, contrary to partial androgen insensitivity syndrome. Yet the cause of ambiguous genitalia may guide sex assignment, and rapid, precise diagnosis of 5α-reductase deficiency is essential. The aim of the study was to describe relevant data for clinical diagnosis, biological investigation, and molecular determination from 55 patients with srd5A2 mutations ...

Interannual variability in the global land carbon sink is strongly related to variations in tropical temperature and rainfall. This association suggests an important role for moisture-driven fluctuations in tropical vegetation productivity, but empirical evidence to quantify the responsible ecological processes is missing. Such evidence can be obtained from tree-ring data that quantify variability in a major vegetation productivity component: woody biomass growth. Here we compile a pantropical tree- ...

O artigo está organizado em três partes que compreendem os três elementos indissociáveis que constituem os primeiros movimentos no sentido de superar o “estado de Exceção” da violência sem memória. Abstract Background The mosquito Culex pipiens is a vector for several pathogens, such as the West Nile virus. As the most abundant mosquito in Portugal, understanding its spatial distribution can support vector-borne diseases control and robust public health planning, given the mainland’s favourable climate for this vector. Information on its spatial distribution at a national level is limited, especially its association with climate variables. Thus we aimed to predict the suitability of Culex ...
