The Central Andes is a key global location to study the enigmatic relation between volcanism and plutonism because it has been the site of large ignimbrite-forming eruptions during the past several million years and currently hosts the world’s largest zone of silicic partial melt in the form of the Altiplano-Puna Magma (or Mush) Body (APMB) and the Southern Puna Magma Body (SPMB). In this themed issue, results from the recently completed PLUTONS project are synthesized. This project focused an interdisciplinary ...

Hyperglycemia is associated with complications in the surgical intensive care unit. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy and safety of nurse-driven insulin infusion protocols in lowering blood glucose (BG) in critical illness. All patients in a 24-bed surgical intensive care unit who required i.v. insulin infusions during 3 noncontiguous 6-month periods from 2002 to 2004 were evaluated. We use cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN) exposure ages from polished, striated bedrock to constrain numerical simulations of deglaciation in the Middle Boulder Creek Valley, Colorado Front Range, and the Animas River Valley, San Juan Mountains, Colorado. In both valleys, the cosmogenic ages suggest initiation of deglaciation ∼20 ka and ongoing retreat until 12–13 ka. While the first‐order trend in CRN concentrations in each valley suggests a monotonic glacial retreat, we evaluate other retreat scenarios ...

Electoral and campaign finance reforms are believed to improve the competitiveness of elections and the accessibility of the electoral process; however, the interaction between electoral institutions and competitiveness and accessibility in nonpartisan municipal elections remains understudied. This article examines the City of Toronto, which exemplifies many of the reforms proposed in the American context, including a strict campaign finance regime and low barriers to candidate entry. Analysis of ...

Abstract Purpose: Osimertinib is a potent and selective EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) of both sensitizing and T790M resistance mutations. To treat metastatic brain disease, blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability is considered desirable for increasing clinical efficacy. Experimental Design: We examined the level of brain penetration for 16 irreversible and reversible EGFR-TKIs using multiple in vitro and in vivo BBB preclinical models. Results: In vitro osimertinib was the weakest substrate ...

Current guidelines recommend using antiseptic- or antibiotic-impregnated central venous catheters (CVCs) if, following a comprehensive strategy to prevent catheter-related blood stream infection (CR-BSI), infection rates remain above institutional goals based on benchmark values. The purpose of this study was to determine if chlorhexidine/silver sulfadiazine-impregnated CVCs could decrease the CR-BSI rate in an intensive care unit (ICU) with a low baseline infection rate.Pre-intervention and post-intervention ...

Peptidoglycan associated lipoprotein (Pal) has been shown to exhibit a unique dual orientation in Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). That is, Pal has two subpopulations, one surface exposed subpopulation and one periplasmic subpopulation. The periplasmic Pal subpopulation binds tightly (but noncovalently) to peptidoglycan. Both subpopulations of Pal are thought to be released from E. coli under certain conditions, and released Pal has been shown to be implicated in the clinical condition of sepsis. This study ...

Peptidoglycan‐associated lipoprotein, Pal, is found in the outer membrane of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and other Gram‐negative bacteria. Previous research has shown that under certain conditions, including several animal models of sepsis, Pal is released from E. coli and is thought to be implicated in the clinical condition of sepsis. In Gram‐negative bacteria, Pal is non‐covalently, but tightly bound to peptidoglycan. We hypothesize that the strong Pal‐peptidoglycan interactions influence Pal’s ...

Sputtering is a high vacuum physical vapor deposition technique during which atoms are excited from the surface of a target by a plasma. The energized atoms create a thin layer (thin film) on the surface of a chosen substrate material. Film thickness is determined by the deposition time (longer time thicker films). Our project aims to enhance the antimicrobial properties of a variety of textiles, polymers, and other surfaces by sputtering a nanometric film of different metals such as copper (Cu), gold ( ...

Abstract Liquid exfoliation is a scalable and effective method for synthesizing 2D nanosheets (NSs) but often induces contamination and defects. Here, liquid metal gallium (Ga) is used to exfoliate bulk layered materials into 2D NSs at near room temperature, utilizing the liquid surface tension and Ga intercalation to disrupt Van der Waals (vdW) forces. In addition, the process can transform the 2H‐phase of transition metal dichalcogenides into the 1T’‐phase under ambient conditions. This method produces ...

Oseltamivir resistance among 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) viruses (pH1N1) is rare. This paper presents an approach based on higher order dynamic mode decomposition (HODMD) to model, analyse, and forecast energy behaviour in an urban agriculture farm situated in a retrofitted London underground tunnel, where observed measurements are influenced by noisy and occasionally transient conditions. HODMD is a data-driven reduced order modelling method typically used to analyse and predict highly noisy and complex flows in fluid dynamics or any type of complex data from dynamical systems. ...
