To assess the association between the NOS3 4b/a, T-786C and G894T polymorphisms and diabetic retinopathy (DR) susceptibility.Twenty-one studies covering 8,111 subjects were included. The fixed or random effect model used was based on heterogeneity.A significant association of the intron 4a allele in the NOS3 4b/a polymorphism with reduced risk of DR was found in dominant (OR 0.778, 95% CI 0.654-0.926) and additive (OR 0.809, 95% CI 0.698-0.937) models. Subgroup analysis revealed that the intron 4a ...

The genetic mechanisms responsible for increased incidence of lymphoma in immunocompromised individuals have not been fully elucidated. We show that, in a line of TCR transgenic TG-B mice, an insertional mutation in one allele of the Epm2a locus and epigenetic silencing of another led to a high rate of lymphoma with early onset. Overexpressing Epm2a suppressed the growth of established tumor cells and the development of lymphoma in the TG-B mice, while specific silencing of the locus increased tumorigenesis ...

An annealed polypyrrole (PPy)/poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA film was successfully applied to the ZnCo2O4 nanorod surface via a liquid-phase synthesis approach and a subsequent annealing process. PVA played a pivotal role in the formation and performance of ZnCo2O4@PPy/PVA nanocomposites by inhibiting the aggregation of PPy nanospheres, guaranteeing firm adhesion between PPy and ZnCo2O4, and suppressing the huge volume expansion of ZnCo2O4 during cycling. The uniform dispersion and high conductivity of ...

Inflammation-induced lymphangiogenesis is a widely accepted concept. However, most of the inflammatory factors and their related mechanisms have not been clarified. It has been reported that sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is not only closely related to the chronic inflammatory process but also affects angiogenesis. Therefore, we investigated the inflammatory effects of S1P on human lymphatic endothelial cells (HLECs). Our results showed that S1P promotes tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin- ...

The electrosynthesis of valuable multicarbon chemicals using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a feedstock has substantially progressed recently but still faces considerable challenges. A major difficulty lines in the sluggish kinetics of forming carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds, especially in neutral media. We report here that oxide-derived copper crystals enclosed by six {100} and eight {111} facets can reduce CO2 to multicarbon products with a high Faradaic efficiency of 74.9 ± 1.7% at a commercially relevant current ...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Inhibition of monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B), which is mainly found in the glial cells of the brain, may lead to an elevated level of dopamine (DA) in patients. MAO-B inhibitors have been used extensively for patients with PD. However, the discovery of the selective MAO-B inhibitor is still a challenge. In this study, a computational strategy was designed for the rapid discovery of selective MAO-B inhibitors. A ...

Self-trapped excitons (STEs) in metal halide materials are attracting an increasing level of interest due to their unique light emission properties. Light emission from STEs in metal halides is usually associated with excited-state structural deformation, which lowers the symmetry of local structures, as seen for the STEs in a wide range of materials systems. Here, we reveal a prototypic STE-associated structural "distortion" that, however, enhances the symmetry of local structures, in a series of ...

The monotonic work function of graphene makes it difficult to meet the electrode requirements of every device with different band structures. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (TMCs), such as carbides in MXene, are considered good candidates for electrodes as a complement to graphene. Carbides in MXene have been used to make electrodes for use in devices such as lithium batteries. However, the small lateral size and thermal instability of carbides in MXene, synthesized by the chemically ...

The alignment of organic single crystals with controlled placement and reasonable throughput is a practical way to realize their ultimate applications in electronics or photoelectronics, which however is still a challenging task. Here, a facile solution-processed dip-coating method is developed to construct crystalline fullerene arrays which exhibit excellent UV-light sensing performance. Our approach has realized the large-scale production of continuous C60 single-crystal arrays in a controllable ...

An effective way for promoting photocatalytic activity of a semiconductor is deposition of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) onto it. In this paper, we deposited Ag and Pd onto ZnO NPs to form ZnO/Ag and ZnO/Pd hybrid nanostructures. It was found that both Ag and Pd nanocomponents can greatly enhance the photocatalytic activity and phototoxicity of ZnO toward human skin cells. Using electron spin resonance spectroscopy with spin trapping and spin labeling techniques, we observed that either deposition ...
