A 39-year-old woman with a history of high myopia underwent uneventful implantation of phakic posterior chamber implantable collamer lenses (ICLs) 6 years earlier in both eyes with a visual acuity of 20/20 bilaterally. Slit-lamp examination showed a partially dislocated ICL in the anterior chamber, associated with ocular hypertension. It was decided to treat her with topical ocular hypotensive ...

The isolation, purification, biochemical and biophysical characterization of the first reported β-xylosidase from Geobacillus pallidus are described. The protein has an optimum pH close to 8 and an optimum temperature of 70 °C. These biochemical properties agree with those obtained by spectroscopic techniques, namely, circular dichroism (CD), infrared (FTIR) and fluorescence measurements. Thermal denaturation, followed by CD and FTIR, showed an apparent thermal denaturation midpoint close to 80 °C. ...

We studied the association of ACE and ACTN3 polymorphisms with skeletal muscle phenotypes (i. e. upper and lower body muscular strength and functional tests) in Spanish nonagenarian subjects [n=41, 33 women, 8 men, age: 90-97 years]. Mean values of the study phenotypes were not significantly different (all P>0.05) between ACE and ACTN3 genotypes. The analyses of the combined effects between genotypes ( ACE DD & ACTN3 RR/RX vs. ACE II/ID & ACTN3 XX) did not yield any significant difference. Our data suggest ...

Members of the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK)-inhibitory protein (CIP)/kinase-inhibitory protein (KIP) family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors regulate proliferation and cell cycle exit of mammalian cells. In the adult brain, the CIP/KIP protein p27(kip1) has been related to the regulation of intermediate progenitor cells located in neurogenic niches. Here, we uncover a novel function of p27(kip1) in the adult hippocampus as a dual regulator of stem cell quiescence and of cell-cycle exit of immature ...

Collectively, those 100 individuals developed 125 inflorescences, composed of 96 staminates, 28 pistillates, and 1 androgynous. ...

Here we describe a method to study the in vivo effect of a soluble factor on cell cycle entry and proliferation of aNSCs located in the brain neurogenic niches. First, we provide information for implanting osmotic minipumps that will deliver the compound of interest directly into the mouse brain. When combined with the administration of the thymidine analog bromodeoxyuridine ( ...
