Inglis, then a lieutenant-colonet commanding the 57th of Foot at Albuhera in 1811 during the Peninsula War, was woundd in the battle. From the ground he called on his men: " Die hard, 57th! dle hard!" They suffered severe casualties in the action and were awarded the battle honour " Albuhera". Inglis recovered and went on to become a general. The 57th later became the Middlesex Regiment but were still known by their nickname of the Die-hards.
