Peking protesters massacred Thousand feared dead as tanks crush heroic resistance The British Government must re-examine its responsibilities to the people of Hong Kong after the massacre in Peking, Mrs Selina Chow, a member of the Hong Kong legislative council, said in London yesterday, The worst fears of the Hong Kong people have been confirmed by the events in Peking, she said. The British Government must face the situation squarely and do some real soul searching. The people of Hong Kong only accepted the Agreement because of assurances from the British and because of apparent reforms in China over the last 10 years. The Legislative Council is examining the final draft of Hong Kong's Basic Law, which will come into force when the colony is handed over to China in 1997.
