In a report published in the medical journal The Lancet today, Dr David Barker and colleagues from Southampton General Hospital recommend promoting the growth of babies who are below average weight at birth, especially boys weighing less than 7½ lb. Their conclusions come from a study of the health records of 5,654 men born between 1911 and 1930 in six districts in Hertfordshire. Their weights were recorded at birth and after one year.
