ResumoFrontmatter: The Thomsonian and Botanic Medical Adviser. Essay: I Hereby Certify That I Was Afflicated in February Last, with the Intermittent Fever, and Was Attended by Drs.—And—For about Six Weeks, but Still Remained Very Ill; and Was Advised by a Friend to Send for the Thomsonian Dr. John M. Williams, I Accordingly Sent for Him and His Success Surpassed What I Expected, Not Withstanding My Having Heard Such Very Favourable Reports Relative to His Practice; for in the Course of a Week, the Disease Was Destroyed, and My Appetite Restored, This Certifies, That the Preparing and Compounding the Medicine in Manner Described in the Patent, and Administering Them to Cure Diseases, Which Dr. Thomson Claims as His Own Invention, I Believe to Be New and Useful, Certificates, To Dr. John Thomson, I Hereby Certify That My Son David Columbus, Was Taken Ill of the Inflammatory Croup, or Quinzey, on the 28th Jan. 1827, and Was Attended by Dr.—, until the 31st of the Same Month; When He Said That He Could Do No More for Him, Doct. John Thomson, Sir—In Answer to Your Request as to My Opinion upon the Merits of Your System of Practice, I Cheerfully Say, That I Believe It Will Eventually Take the Preference of All Other Systems of Medical Practice, I Hereby Certify That I Was Afflicted, since Last October, … Constant Pain in My Left Side, and It Was Frequently so Bad with Arm from Me Sleeping at Night, and Rendered Me Unable to Raise My Arm from My Side, Accompained with a Soreness in the Side Which Was Painful in the Extreme, When Touched; nor Could I Obtain Relief from This Distressing Situation, until I Happened to Hear of Mr. John M. Williams, (a Practitioner of Thomson's Patent Vegetable Medicines) to Whom I Made Application in the First Part of This Month, and from Whom I Received Entire Reliefin Less than Two Weeks, and Am Now Enjoying Better Health than I Have for a Year past, and Shall Consider It a Duty Hencef, The Following, Is an Extract from the 7th Lecture of Dr. Samuel Robinson, of Ohio, Recommending Thomson's System and Practice, I Hereby Certify, That I Was Afflicted Thirteen Years with the Rheumatism, with Which I Suffered beyond What Is Possible for Me to Express; and Spent, I Think I May Say, Hundreds of Dollars, for Medicines and Medical Attendance; but All in Vain, Sir—In Compliance with Your Request, and with a Wish to Do Justice to the Public in Relation to the Effects of What Is Called the "Thomsonian System of Practice" on the Community, I Feel Myself Justified in Saying, That Having Been One of a Committee of Five, Appointed by the Assembly of the State of New York, to Inquire into and Report to That House on That Subject, I Have Made Particular Examination so Far as I Could Find Time and Opportunity, during Three or Four Weeks in the City of Albany, This May Certify, That I Was Afflicated for about Two Years with a Distressing Sensation in My Side and Back, Which Was Considered to Be the Liver Complaint by Dr.—, and I Was Attended by Him Accordingly, but Still Continued to Be Annoyed by Those Distressing Sensations, and Was Advised to Call Dr.—In, Who Pronounced It to Be an Affection of the Kidneys, and Said That I Might Be Partially Relieved by Going through a Regular Course of Calomel, but Would Never Be Restored to Health; but I Fortunately Heard of the Thomsonian System of Medicine, and Was Finally Prevailed on by My Friend, Henry Suter, to Make Application to John M. Williams, the Thomsonian Doctor, in the First Pa, I Hereby Certify, That I Was Afflicted in the Fall of 1827, with What Was Termed Bilious Fever, and Was Attended by Dr.—, between Six and Seven Weeks, at Which Time I Was so Ill as to Cause Myself and Friends to Doubt of the Possibility of My Recovery, and the Doctor Entirely Discontinued to Visit Me; When Fortunately, I Was Advised to Send for John M. Williams (a Practitioner of Thomson's Patent Vegetable Medicine) Who Came to See Me, and Commenced the Administration of Said Medicine, and Continued to Attend Me Regularly; the Result of Which Was That Is between One and Two Weeks I Found My Health Much Improved, and Was Soon Restored to Better Health than I Had Enjoyed for a Con, To the Honorable the Legislature of the State of New-York, I Hereby Certify That I Was Afflicted in the Fall of 1826, with Violent Pains in My Breast and Stomach, and Was Attended by Dr.—, for about Two Months, but Received Very Little Benefit from Any Thing That He Administered, and Having Heard of the Great Benefit That My Neighbours Had Received from Mr. John M. Williams, Who Practices Thomson's Patent Vegetables Medicines, I Requested One of Them to Ask Him to Call to See Me, Which He Did, in December, and Commenced Administering His Medicines to Me; through the Medium of Which, I Was Enabled in about One Week to Attend to My Business and Have Continued to Enjoy a Good Degree of Health up to the Present; and Do Feel Truely Gratefu, Extracts of Letters from Dr. David Morrill, of Union Village, Ohio, to Dr. Thomson, I Hereby Certify That I Was Afflicted with the Rheumatism in April Last, from Which I Experienced the Most Excruciating Pains and Was Entirely Deprived of the Use of My Left Leg, Dr.—, Was Called in, Who Administered to Me, but I Still Grew Worse; and Was Finally, Prevailed on by My Friends, to Send for John M. Williams, the Thomsonian Doctor; Though I Must Acknowledge, That I Had No Expectation of Receiving Any Assistance from Him, in Consequence of the Erroneous Statements Which I Had Heard Concerning His Medicines, Report of the Select Committee of the Legislature of New York, in 1825, on the Thomsonian Practice of Physic, Address to the Public, Copy of a Letter from the Celebrated.
