pp 75-76 1839 April 30. Buxton to Bandinel, of the Foreign Office, about the Formosa channel being the right one by which to enter the Niger, not the Num, the effect of the summer rains on the height of the river, the advisability of the expedition going as far up the river as it can and negotiating first with the great chiefs of Benin, Fundah, Iddah, Rabbah, Boussa and Yaorri and of sending emissaries to the King of the Ashanti and the Sultan of Bornu, rather than spending the first three months in the coastal region, leaving little time for investigation of the interior; he declares that McQueen shared this opinion.
