pp 103-06 1839 May 18. Priscilla Johnston to Dr Philip, begging him to write a long letter full of facts about himself, his family, his work for the Africans in the various projects. She asks for news of Tzatzoe, promises a gift for the schools at Buxton and Kat River and inquires about the Reads. She also describes their enslavement to the slave trade project, the printing of Buxton's book the previous August, its publication in February, the reaction of the Government, the work on the second volume and the spirit in which Buxton was tackling it. She mentions her mother's health, the birth of her own third child and the settlement of her family in England following Andrew's appointment to a post in the Gurney bank. She delivers a message from her father that he had done his utmost for Stockenstrom and regretted that the Government would do no more. Finally she reports the departure of her parents on May 20 for London. A postscript by Sarah Buxton reiterates her niece's request for news from him, reports that Priscilla and her three children were staying at the cottage for a while, that they had all passed a most happy winter there and her hopes that the work they had done, especially her brother's, would bear fruit and that they would see it. Finally she reports on the activities of the younger members of the family and sends her own and Anna's good wishes to him. (Copy.)
