The Times Memoir pp 458 e-j 1839 Nov 30. Buxton, from Mont Cenis, to Hannah Buxton, Edward Buxton or Priscilla Johnston, describing their indecision about their route after Lyons, their opinions vacillating between taking the Marseilles packet and going over Mount Cenis. The arrival of Walters of, an M.P. and supporter of Daniel O'Connell, had determined them to take the route over Mount Cenis which he had taken two days before. He describes their journey through Chamberry and Landslebourg and the long stages, twenty hours, in the coach on one day. He depicts the dangerous mountain route, their coach drawn by eight horses, the cart or sleigh bearing their luggage and the thirteen attendants to help them over the difficult places. They had experienced a tornado or blizzard while passing carts laden with wine from Italy, an argument between the twoconvoys had broken out and one of the carts had had to be manhandled off the road so that their coach could proceed in the deep snow. Later their coach had been in danger of overturning but this had been prevented by the strength of their attendants in balancing it. He also writes ofmeeting a wolf or fox and his self-denial in deciding not to leave Anna to go wolf-hunting, the dropping of his guns in the snow by his servant so that they got wet and misfired and Anna, having examined the animal through her telescope, pronouncing that it was indeed a wolf. In the endthey had had to stop at an inn on top of the mountain because it was impossible to descend that night and he had been deprived of his hunting. They intended to descend the mountain the next day in spite of it being a Sunday because they had no wish to spend a month there in the snow with nothing to do but hunt foxes. They planned to rest for a day at Susa to refit their vehicles. (Copy.) (p 454.)
