p 352 1840 Aug 20. Lord John Russell to Buxton and Lushington, refusing to give any assurances that Her Majesty's Government could grant the protection they desired for the Agricultural Establishment. He intended to give a copy of their letter to the Commissioners of the Expedition with instructions to discover whether the acquisition of such a tract of land as they required was possible and to determine the force necessary for its protection, whether the neighbouring tribes were likely to be hostile or friendly to an establishment under the British Crown and whether it could be founded in a tolerably healthy district for Europeans.
