pp 74-75 1840 Dec 14. Buxton to Andrew Johnston, rejoicing in the action of the younger members of their group at a meeting of the Agricultural Society in his absence. He warns him not to be too liberal in his donation at present since the real need for money would come much later when the Agricultural Institution was established, adding that Anna Gurney had given £20 for their first plough. He mentions that he was confined to Upton with a chest cold but intended to be back at work by the Wednesday and to set out for Norfolk on the Friday. He reports that Larry [the gamekeeper] and the coachman both approved of the Chartist [possibly the horse he bought from the clergyman] and that he had bought Bacon's farm adjoining Long's farm for £10,000 less than Samuel Hoare and his father had earlier bid for them. He announces that Elizabeth Fry had just arrived for dinner and records his pleasure at little Andrew's letter. (Copy.)
