p 90 1840 Dec 25. Buxton to Washington, saying that he had written to Cook and Sir George Stephen about the first effort of the Agricultural Society. He mentions his alarm at what he had said about the vessels and asks whether anything could be done in the time left. He expresses the belief that though their hopes might seem to be crushed now all would work out in the long run for the deliverance of Africa. Finally he sends good wishes for Christmas and remarks that his health did not seem to be improving as quickly as he had hoped. (Copy.)
