p 287 1841 July 17. Buxton to Lord Edward Howard, about the visit paid by the nephew of William Hutton, the African merchant of Watling Street, to the King of Dahomey and their belief that the king, who was already growing cotton, might be induced to give up his trading in slaves if De Susa, the great slave trader on the coast, could be granted a pension by the British Govern- ment to give up his own trade and use his influence with him. He asks him to let Lord John Russell know about this when he returned to London and to persuade him to see Hutton. (Copy.)
