pp 304-7 1841 Aug 28. Buxton to Anna Gurney, from Ansdale, explaining that he had been so lazy lately and so occupied in shooting that he had decided to write a single letter to her, Mrs Upcher and Priscilla instead of one to each. He reports on the improvement in his health since the beginning of his Scottish holiday, gives accounts of his days' shooting and their bag and mentions his hope of getting a shot at two stags seen from time to time. He describes their reading Sir Walter Scott's "Pirate" in the evenings and the excursion made by Chenda, Catherine and Edward in the hope of going to Orkney, though they would probably be satisfied with staying at John O'Groats in view of the state of the sea. He refers to Hannah's control of his diet which seemed to be doing him good, the menu they were enjoying, the Sunday service at Helmsdale and the refusal of the fishing fleet to set out to sea on either Saturday night or Sunday. He adds that he had been able to learn nothing about the measures taken to relieve those who were wrecked. Finally he records that it was Fowell's birthday and that he himself went to Sheringham for the first time twenty years ago. (Copy.)
