pp 409-11 1842 Jan 11. Buxton to Anson, regretting that his interview with the Prince wa even longer delayed by his own illness because he wished to inform him of certain facts conoerning the Expedition which had not found their way into the newspaper accounts; he was therefore snding Anson some of the more interesting private letters for their contents to be conveyed to the Prince if he thought fit. He gives a summary account of the entry of the vessels into the Niger on August 14, their conclusion of treaties with the king of Eboe and Egarrah and the purchase of a tract of land before September 10, the outbreak of fever which caused Trotter to send the 'Soudan' back on the 19th and the 'Wilberforce' back on the 21st from the confluence of the Niger and the Tohadda, while he and Bird Allen oontinued in the IAlbert' to Babbah. About 75 had been ill, one third of whom had died. He nevertheless rejoices in the prospect of success for the main objects of the Expedition and Captain Cook's and Captain Trotter's own optimism, mentioning the latter's intention to rendesvous with the other vessels at Fernando Po on January 1 and make a second attempt on ascent of the Niger as soon as it was again navigable, probably March or April. He hoped for more favourable accounts of their second voyage. (Copy.)
