pp 423-24 1842 Jan 17. Buxton to Sir Robert Peel, asking for an appointment for a deputation from the African Civilization Society, because the recent news from the Niger demanded instant action on the subject about which they wished to see him. He informs him of Trotter's intention to reascend the Niger and this, in view of what he had already accomplished, involved consideration of what he called a National Undertaking. He wished to see him about that, about Fernando Po and other matters connected with the suppression of the slave trade. He asks that the date fixed might be as near February 1 as possible. Finally he congratulates the Government on the signing of the five-power treaty. A note appended states that because of the announcement of the death of Bird Allen this was not forwarded by Trew.
