Memoir pp 263-66 1821 Jan 30. London. He writes of having postponed a visit to Coggeshall in favour of a meeting of the African Institution at which he had spoken of the inactivity and ineffectiveness of the body, its consequent guilt in allowing the continuance of the slave trade and loss of confidence of the country by its supine attitude, with the result that the people knew and cared little about slavery. He blamed the Institution for negotiating secretly with Ministers instead of acting in the open. As a consequence a meeting of all the Members of both Houses interested in the subject was being called for the following Saturday at Lord Lansdowne's house. This story was related for the benefit of Priscilla who had exhorted him not to forget the slaves. He thanks his sons for their letters and sends Christiana the Queen's autograph for a friend. He ends with an account of his programme until he should see her again. ( p 104.)
