Memoir pp 29-30 1832 May. Buxton to Lord Althorp, written before an interview immediately preceding the Slavery Debate of May 24, warning him that he was going to testify against the horrors of slavery and that he was supported by a considerable body of opinion. Since he represented people who could not speak for themselves he would act according to the dictates of his conscience, not the interests of his powerful friends in England; therefore he could neither cancel nor postpone his Motion in the House.
