pp 111-14 1837 Jan 17. Extract of a letter from Stevenson in Rio de Janeiro about the unprecedented increase in the slave trade there, the information he had sent to Hamilton, who would not act without express instructions, and the possibility that with twelve fast schooners the trade could be suppressed in Rio de Janeiro within a few months. He warns that the reliance of the Ministers on the pending treaty with Portugal was mistaken if the terms were no different from those of the treaties with other powers and if it were not backed up by force. He advises that Hamilton's correspondence should be called for and a Committee of Inquiry moved to investigate the trade in Brazil, promising to give his evidence to such in writing. He suggests that Wallace of Greenock might take up the cause, though he thought it would be better if Buxton did so. If The Times should take the matter up he warns that it should be done without revealing that the information had come from him and he lists the questions which should be asked about the Brazilian trade.
