H 12 pp 83-86 1839 Feb 18 - March 4. John Miller from St. John's, Antigua to Trew about the enthusiasm of the several missionaries in the island for the scheme mentioned in his circular, attributing failures in the past to establish such a project being due to lack of moral quality in the agents chosen and suggesting that trainees should pass through the Infant Training School. He offers to supply candidates for five of the sections mentioned. He thanks Trew for his interest in him and explains why he had been unable to pay for the purchase of his horse himself. The first letter is endorsed with a note that extracts from it had been inserted in the book. The second letter introduces the Rev. Bennet Harvey the superintendent of the Moravian mission who was returning to England for his health and wished to be introduced to Lord Glenelg. He also recommends attention to the views of the Rev. Hotherton who was writing to Trew. Confident that the work of the native agency would flourish if the right men were chosen, he states that he had five men on whom he was keeping his eye with the prospect of sending them to Africa. He reports on enthusiastic missionary meetings but comments that the negroes had been taught to rely on receiving everything from England and so did not yet recognise their own duty towards those less fortunate in Africa. . (See Vol 18 p 32).
