habeas corpus R 10. pp 229-32 1839 Jan 1. J. P. Robinson to Buxton about a writ of having been issued for the release of three Portuguese held in Plymouth for being engaged in the slave trade, the probability that they would be released because of the existing state of the treaty and the angry correspondence which had passed between Palmerston and the Portuguese Minister on the subject, the fomer declaring that British officers would be protected in any act they might consider it their duty to perform in suppressing the slave trade. He wishes Buxton and Inglis to bring their influence to bear in support of the Admiralty if it should decide to continue the men's detention in the face of the legal injunction sought and to encourage the Government to look to the support of Parliament over it. He adds that he had obtained the information from his company's solicitors who were also the solicitors of the Portuguese Government and the source of information should therefore not be revealed.
